Mission District

Grand Opening for Grand Coffee on Mission

Peep this: a new coffee shop just opened up on Mission between 22nd and 23rd.  Normally this wouldn't be notable, but the inside of this place is straight-up badass.  The owner took the old Grand Theater's concession stand and turned it into a small coffee kiosk.  He also reclaimed some redwood floors and used them to cover up all the conduit, ensuring that Grand Coffee will be a hit with the flickrnets.  No real seating in this place, but they serve reasonably priced Ritual Four Barrel and should have tea starting next week.

Go feed your addiction, people.

Treat St. Knows How to Throw Down on the 4th

Needless to say, I was inspired by the unabashed lawlessness on both ends of Treat St. last night: two simultaneous block parties of fireworks and alcohol with traffic not being let through on either end.  Desperate to learn from these black belts of chaos, I asked one guy lighting off fireworks how they could get away with it, despite all the police driving by: “This is Mexico, they don't fuck with us.”

Anyway, be sure to turn up the video to HD because it looks like crap otherwise.  Be sure to stick around for the grand finale.

Pop's Seventh Annual Tricycle Race: A Photo Journal

Winner of best costume and best facial expression caught on camera.

Unfortunately I'm an idiot and got to Pop's right at 5pm, so I couldn't compete myself. However, I was able to be a creeper and take 'mad photos' of the race.

Proving to be the Lance Armstrong of 24th and York, Tuffy won the competition for the 5th goddamn time.  Also, since I don't want to make your browser explode, I decided to embrace Flickr and upload all 55 shots there.

Five-time champion Tuffy showering the crowd with confetti.

The Dangers of Stripping and Driving

Saw this wreckage from a grizzly 3-car pile up on San Jose and Dolores the other day.  The cops looked far too busy so I didn't ask any questions, but I can't help but wonder why the hell there is a pink bra hanging out the window and why there is puke all over the passenger side door.  Hope everyone made it out okay!

Valencia's Public Posts

Valencia St. just received a nice new crop of “public posts” for the community to use for flyer posting and artwork.  From post designer Michael Arcega's site:

Valencia Street Post consists of four poles with Victorian-inspired crowns that punctuate the various bulb-outs on Valencia Street. Each 12 ft. post includes a highly ornamented crown constructed of steel with an automotive finish and UV clear-coat. The unadorned midsection is designed for community interaction. The public is invited to use the four sites as informal community bulletin boards for notices, events, ads, and the like. “Valencia Street Post” will be engraved atop each individualized ornamental crown. The word post can mean a variety of things from pole, news, postering, “post” identity, and/or “post” modern— all of which are correct. The (Stick-Style) Victorian signifier is meant to evoke the site’s history. Since most of the older buildings up to 20th Street were destroyed during fires in 1906, the area has transformed its appearance numerous times. The juxtaposition of a bulletin-street-pole with classic San Franciscan architecture embraces the past and present- leaving room for the future collaborations by the community.

Within a day or going up, the posts were getting well used:

Levi's Workshops Receiving Favorable Local Feedback

Saturday Night I was at some bar and some crazy anarchist chick was ranting about the Levi's Workshop on Valencia claiming she was going to vandalize it.  I just assumed she was some sort of PR bot for the company and didn't pay much attention to her.  Turns out my assumptions were wrong: come Sunday morning, the building was covered in statements such as “BUY USED” and ” NO MORE TRASH” and a number of “SCAM” tags.  I guess no one likes a PR stunt on Valencia.

UPDATE: I should have checked the inbox before posting.  A reader sent us this pic this morning:

Sunny Side Up

This is by far one of my favorite pieces of art in all of San Francisco.  Brilliant in its simplicity.  Plus, it greets me on all my hungover walks to the IGA to acquire Smacks.

Second Humphry Slocombe Headed For 20th St.

This news is a little stale, but Inside Scoop reports that Humphry Slocombe is opening a second location on 20th and Florida.  PEOPLE, THAT'S TWO TIMES THE SEMI-NAKED CRAZY WOMEN IN THE MISSION.  But check it, they are calling the new venture “The Parlour by Humphry Slocombe,” which just reminds me of aggrandizing fashion bands like “Marc by Marc Jacobs,” but let's move on.  The new venture will be both a cafe and ice cream parlor:

The sequel to Humphry Slocombe will be called “The Parlour by Humphry Slocombe.” Unlike the original, it will be a bakery and cafe, though there will be plenty of ice cream too (naturally!). Jake Godby will be doing modern interpretations of American classics — think: the Duck Fat Pecan Pie — and it will be open throughout the day, early and late. Beverages will encompass everything from coffee to beer to wine.

Anyway, I think it was a smashing idea to get a beer and wine permit because I'd have to be REAL DRUNK to eat “Duck Fat Pecan Pie” or whatever pastry they decide to flavor balsamic vinaigrette.  Can't wait!
