History Of The Vocoder

Before people went all bitchmade with autotune there was the vocoder which made music futuristic as fuck. Dave Tomkins wrote a book about it, How To Wreck A Nice Beach, and tonight Change The Beat is hosting the release party for it at SOM. Holler son cause it’s going down. B.Cause isgoing  to rock his Zapp & Roger tribute mix, Freddy Anzures is playing a future shock vocoder set. It’s going to be hella robotic and shit!  Get down or lay down!

They also have an event at La Pena Cultural Center in Berkeley tonight from 7-9pm  and on Thursday at 222 he’ll be at the Hot Wax jump off with Monk-One, Freddy & Marky all djing.

Free zipline rides in Justin Herman Plaza starting tomorrow!

So, I don’t know about you all, but I’m definitely doing this.

Urban Zip-Line Coming to San Francisco! Zoom 600 Feet Over Justin Herman Plaza for Free

Those people in British Columbia, they like to have fun. So, in order to get you to think about taking your next vacay up in the Great White, they’re going to install a 600-foot-long zip-line* in Embarcadero Square and run it for eleven days starting April 8th, 2010. And, assuming you meet their physical requirements (It looks like I’ll qualify, but 280-pound Epic Beard Man Thomas Bruso probably won’t), you’ll be able to harness up and go for a 200-yard ride FOR FREE.

Imagine zooming over the giant white tent hey’re constructing for Peter Pan (opening April 27th!) at neighboring Sue Bierman Park.

Thanks, Canada! I doubt I’ll ever go up there to vacation, but the awesome free zipline ride will be much appreciated.

WATCH MOVIES DRUNK AND STONED: Corner Store

I’m not one to get all “HEY IF I TURN THIS INTO AN EVENTS BLOG I’LL GET MORE READERS BECAUSE PEOPLE ARE IDIOTS AND NEED A BLOG TO TELL THEM WHAT TO DO” but anyone who explicitly invites us to shit on their movie gets some respect in my book, so go to the Victoria Theatre (16th @ Capp) tomorrow for a 3pm or 7pm showing.  I’ll be the guy puking between the seats and cursing at the Israeli apartheid state.

despite the fact that the only movie review that i’ve seen on uptown almanac is a picture of a drunk chick on the can, we’re going against our better judgment and inviting you to the screening of our documentary this saturday. the film is about a corner store owner at church and 15th that we followed through the last year of the process of bringing his family to san francisco from the west bank (a ten year process). more info on our site.

Heeb Magazine Presents: Slow Food Seder at Mission Beach Cafe

From Chava:

I don’t know whether to immediately get a ticket, go to temple and pray for hipster forgiveness, or cry.

The best part of this whole thing is that it WONT BE KOSHER FOR PASSOVER because it is presumably going to be cooked in Mission Beach’s trayf kitchen.  WIN.  FAIL.  Argh, internets, which is it today?

Heeb Magazine is partnering with Mission Beach Café for its annual Slow Food Seder. Traditional Jewish dishes, made with fresh, seasonal, local and organic ingredients, will be served alongside the very best in new American fare. It’s both a Passover dinner and fine dining experience.

The meal is $55 per person for four courses, excluding tax and gratuity. For reservations, call (415) 861-0198 or book online at http://www.missionbeachcafesf.com. Menu below.

This is what it's come to?

Fucking kettle korn? We’re standing in long lines for kettle korn in this town? And kettle korn with a “k”? Nu-metal kettle korn? This isn’t a carnival. You have other options, ladies and gentlemen.

San Francisco Continues to be Gayest City on Earth

I guess boy bands realize that they can’t film everything in a Los Angeles sound studio and since LA is ugly as shit, they had to travel up here for some hot video. In related news, both of these songs are THE JAM.

JT is all, “Osha Thai is so tasty you see, bring more of that pad thai to meeeeee….” I don’t know, I’m cracking up over here, that shot is amazing. Also, he looks just like Joey from Blossom right there. WHOA!

Full video amazingness below:

Et tu, 98 Degrees!??

Nice 98º tattoo on your arm, bro. Bet that aged well.

AND I LEAVE YOU WITH THIS:

I can never look at the bay in the same way again. This just totally ruined sex for me. Yes, that’s how I do sex. Let your mind run wild, enjoy the show!

Hat tip to the incomparable Eddo!

Local CBS Blogger on Local CBS Station!

Mike Sugerman at CBS 5 is at it again! That lovable newsy is always on the trail of a hot lead (forget facts! what’s that!? who’s he!? Also, did he just say CYBERSPACE!? What is this?? The Net? A: I WISH!), and this time, he’s trying to figure out Foursquare. About a year too late to break any real FourSquare story, this video piece nevertheless features the delightful and adorable Brittney Gilbert of CBS Eye on Blogs (the tables are turned, Gilbert! The eyes are on you now!!) meeting Mayor Patrick Bateman Gavin Newsom. Thrilling.

Also, is Wendy Tokuda drunk? Or super high? Or is that just my fantasy speaking?

Because CBS5 is old media, they won’t let you embed video so you have to click a stupid link.

Vintage Expo at the Concourse today!

As was the case with 50% off day at Community Thrift, I am semi-reluctant to tell the legions of Uptown Almanac readers about the Vintage Expo today, for fear of fierce competition for all the good shit. Unfortunately though, I know I’m too broke to do any real shopping damage today, so I welcome the rivalry from my fellow vintage and retro devotees!

The Vintage Expo is held at the Concourse (635 8th Street x Brannan) until 5pm today. Admission is $10, but students get in free with school ID. There’ll be 80ish vendors with clothing, textiles, jewelry and accessories spanning from the Victorian era to the seventies. From what I’ve heard, prices are steep but the selection is well-edited. More info is on the official website.
