Events, Happenings & Scenes

THIS WEEKEND: Watch Old Films About Go-Carts, Bikes, Skateboards, Soapbox Cars & Other Rad Stuff

I've never been to an ODDBALL FILMS movie night before, but this screening is pretty tempting.  Their press release, stolen from Mission Loc@l:

The Obsession With Things That Go
Event: “Hot Wheels!” Guest curator Pete Gowdy and Oddball Films present an evening of rare 16mm films about things that go- cars, bikes, skateboards, soapbox cars and more. Featured films include Roller Skate Safely (1981), early 80s quads in action; Dust Eaters (1955), “dust eaters”, “grease monkeys” and the “birds” they race- wild souped-up jalopies!; Tough On Two Wheels (1955), awesome British bikes in action!; The Bike Parade (1938), vintage bicycle bonanza; Skateboarding to Safety, skateboarding in all its 1970s glory; Motor Mania (1950), mild-mannered Goofy goes berserk when he gets behind the wheel; Automania 2000 (1963), Oscar-nominated animation from the brilliant Halas & Batchelor Studio and much more!

TONIGHT: 10 Years of Fecal Face

If you don't have shit to do tonight, might I recommend Fecal Face's 10 year anniversary party?  It kicks off at 6pm at The Luggage Store Gallery and moves over to Mezzanine at 9pm.  Honestly, I could give you a description of why you should go to the party, but if you haven't already heard of Fecal Face, you should probably just get shitty on Valencia like you always do.

Hoodstock

If you are sick of San Francisco but don't have a car, why don't you consider traveling to the Oakland and get shitfaced with the friends you never make time to visit?  Hoodstock has an big ass lineup of bands, including groups featuring epic band names such as “Uzi Rash,” “Shannon and the Clams,” and “Bro Montana.”  Also following the alleycat, which if it takes you up Tunnel Rd. you should punch the promoters in the face, there is a “Bike Trick, Track Stand, and Bike Mechanic Competition.”  Go have fun getting your ass out of the Mission.

Eat Real Festival: Camera Phone Coverage Edition

4505 Chicharrones were in full effect.

There was some 'Oakland's Next Top Butcher' action going down.  It looked pretty rad but I was already too full to stick around and see who won.

The very best food came from the very un-branded “Farmstands”. Each of these tents showcased a different local urban farm paired with a local chef.  The rabbit and duck confit were excellent.  Side note: In recent months I've come to the conclusion that there is very a notable 'babe factor' in the East Bay urban farming movement.

AKA: The Snooki Special.

Pork was probably the most over represented meat this weekend.  Where my bovines at?

There were plenty of people yammering about sustainability/etc. and doing demonstrations.  This chicken is about to demonstrate why you should never volunteer to work the Sunday shift at the festival.

Uh, srsly yall?

SHOCKER ALERT: There was no line at the Chipotle tent.

PRO TIP: When fighting through festival sized crowds, use resealable containers to protect you $6 beer investment.

FAKE CELEBRITY SIGHTING OF THE WEEKEND: James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem; not a vegetarian.

If you do anything this weekend, DO THIS.

For those of you who care, sorry I haven't posted here in a dog's age. I got kind of caught up with the whole moving-to-Oakland-and-starting-at-a-new-school thing, and I've also kind of been on a monthlong Four Loko bender. It's truly the devil's juice. Anyway though, this (sure to be awesome) skate video is showing at the Victoria Theatre on 16th & Capp on Sunday night at 7:30.

I think everyone should go. Even if you don't care about skateboarding, you should go anyway because some of the guys in it are cute.

And if you're still unconvinced because you don't care about skateboarding OR cute boys, then … um, what's wrong with you? One man, five syllables: Kevin “Spanky” Long. Swooooon.

Toad & Salmon's Chilibowl 6 + Other crap to do this weekend

If you missed last year's Chilibowl at Potrero del Sol, it was 'fucking tight' and definitely worth checking out this year.  To quote what I wrote about the occasion last summer:

The Chilibowl was an incredible way to squander away a Saturday afternoon: water balloons full of beer, a blood geyser coming out of a guy’s head, filthy jokes from the announcers, a punk band playing awesome songs like “you are dead, motherfucker” and “crack on Mission St.” within a few dozen yards of a playground full of children, and, of course, skateboarding.

That's right, not only is the Chilibowl full of shittalking and blood, it's at Potrero del Sol, which is just like Dolores Park without the cops, trash and whiny neighbors.  If you want to get psyched up for a good time, check out this crappy iPhone video I shot + edited last year with some weak-ass Dan the Automator track dumped on top of it:

If skateboarding sounds like too much fun and you'd rather do more of the same old shit, a bunch of local businesses are shutting down 18th from Dolores to Guerrero so you can drink wine and eat food on the pavement near Dolores Park, as opposed to the urine-soaked grass you usually enjoy.  (link)

Just Your Average Sunday in San Francisco

Man, what a Sunday.  In what had to have been the first sunny day in San Francisco since 1997, there was an endless supply of great things to do.  A nice bike ride along Ocean Beach during Sunday Streets, checking out the vendors and bands at Rock Make in the Mission, rocking out to They Might Be Giants and Rouge Wave at Stern Grove, maybe just a peaceful, albeit traffic infested bike ride along the coast in Marin.  Or you could have, yet again, just hung out with thousands of your coolest friends in Dolores Park to witness to the day's ultimate freak show.

THIS WEEKEND: PBR Pinball Tourney & Rock Make Street Fest.

#TEAM_UppyAlmy has been invited to participate in this invitation pinball tournament (FUNDING THE KEEP-A-BREAST FOUNDATION PEOPLE!), so naturally it is my privilege to invite you to come watch us suck at pinball.  PBR and REBEL8 are going to provide ping pong, pinball machines and some tacos for non-competitors, so it ought to be a good time.

The event is open to the public, so I highly encourage inviting as many friends as possible, particularly for the purpose of cheerleading. We will also have 200 limited edition tees and posters by Mike Giant (who will also be doing a live piece), all for the ridiculously low price of $20, as well as the El Tonayense Taco Truck (I will provide some freebie tacos) and “refreshments”, so bring cash! I am not charging for the tournament, but would love if everybody  made a small donation to Keep A Breast.

TEAMS CONFIRMED: HUF, Benny Gold, FTC, Medicine Agency, Workshop, Bender’s, Fecal Face, Rebel8, 330 Ritch, Evergold/SFAQ, Self Edge, Bro Palace, 111 Minna, Indie Mart, #TEAM_UppyAlmy

As I mentioned, we’ll have the Taco Truck there, as well as ping pong and other games for the general public. Machines will also be open to public for free play after the tournament has wrapped up, so please encourage all your friends to come out.

I went to Rock Make last year and it was a pretty quality time (and free).  I was able to purchase a tshirt with a pigeon screen-printed on it, so that is a huge one up.

As you probably know The Bay Bridged is hosting our 3rd Annual Rock Make Street Festival THIS Sunday, August 22nd in the Mission District.  There will be 15 local and kids rock bands, 100 arts vendors, beer gardens, comedians, jumpy houses, animal demonstrations and more!

ANIMAL DEMONSTRATIONS PEOPLE.

Dolores Park Bike Swap Meat

The announcement of this bicycle commerce party deserves to be shared just because of their epic poster:

The Dolores Park swap loosely organized. 10am is the official start time, but some sellers may be setting up early. to sell, just show up with a blanket and some stuff to flip. to buy, bring cash monie$.You might want some PBR and sunglasses, since you are at DP.

The last one was set up on the main concrete walkway that leads to the bathrooms from 19th street and Dolores. but previous swaps were just on the grass. I’d say its likely to be on the concrete again?

There's Something About Mary Sing-A-Long with Jonathan Richman

If you love INDIE ROCK LEGEND Jonathan Richman, movies featuring jizz in Cameron Diaz's hair and sing-a-longs, then on Thursday grab $3, your best flannel and head to Lost Weekend Video.  From the Lost Weekend Video email list:

The big announcement you may have already seen in the window of the store is next week's performance by local indie rock legend Jonathan Richman. Next Thursday August 19th, Jonathan will be in the store performing live accompaniment to the film 'There's Something About Mary' by the Farrelly Brothers ('Kingpin', 'Shallow Hal') starring Cameron Diaz and Ben Stiller. If you've seen the film, you may remember that Jonathan performs as a sort of Greek Chorus - providing commentary and transition between major scenes. On Thursday, Jonathan will perform this role live as we watch the film, adding bits that were cut out or never used. This is a one time event that will never happen again and only at Lost Weekend Video. Jonathan performs sold out shows around town for the big bucks, but on this night you'll only pay $3 entrance - mostly to cover the cost of having to close for the event. Drinks and snacks will be available. We'll be moving the shelves, so there should be plenty of room, but please arrive early as we will have to make sure things don't get out of hand. Performance will start at dusk, so doors should be around 8pm. It's going to be awesome!
