Medjool to Become Giant Pot Club

Medjool, the recently shuttered bro bar and famed rooftop patio drink spot, is slated to become a distribution center for the noted terror drug known as marijuana.

According to a plan circulated to neighbors by the SF Planning Department, the so-called “medical cannabis dispensary” (to be called “Morado Collective”) will move into the front half of the building. The remaining second half will be left untouched as a restaurant space, scheduled to become Beretta's new Argentinian-influenced concept “Lolinda.”

Given that two Mission District pot clubs have been shut down in recent months (including the Shambhala Healing Center, just one block north), our tipster, Jonathan, doesn't believe that the building owner actually intends to open a pot club.  He theorizes:

This isn't [Gus Murad's] plan at all; he's putting this up for approval so it'll be shot down, as part of a longer negotiation for something else. We weren't going to approve your Marina-crowd tapas bar, but since the alternative was a pot dispensary, here's a rubber stamp.

While that's entirely possible—after all, Gus Murad has been known for his planning antics in the past—it seems as though a lot of work has been put into the potential dispensary.  According to an interview in the SF Examiner with the operator of the club, Eduardo Morales, “the dispensary would be part of a 'pharmacy and respite care' complex for the gay Hispanic community,” with a portion of the revenues going towards the HIV/AIDS prevention non-profit AGUILAS.

No word yet when they plan to open, but the Planning Commission is set to review the application on August 16th.

How Bad Can Medjool's Brunch Be?

TK has put together a compelling guide to New Year's Day brunching, and the brunch at Medjool is bringing out the morbid curiosity in us all:

At first I was all HA HA BIG JOKE I'LL PUT MEDJOOL ON THERE AND WE WILL LAUGH AND LAUGH and then I looked at the brunch menu and guys, it's a brunch buffet for $10.99, and the mimosas are THREE DOLLARS. It can't be THAT bad for brunch, right? I mean, the spiky-hair/shiny-shirt crowd will be at Circa, not here, right? Somebody talk me down. UNKNOWN STARS.

Uhhhhhhhhhhh, see you there?

New Mission Theater is a Dump

New Mission Theater was open for business this week, and by open for business, I mean “people were shoveling mounds of garbage out the front gate.” Does this mean Gus Murad, owner of New Mission Theater and neighboring garbage dump Medjool, is moving forward with his shelved dream project of turning the towering icon into a restaurant and bar, or is he just cleaning the place up to flip it on the market?

Regardless, 25 years of decline and neglect certainly takes a toll on a place:

Douchebag Mecca Medjool, New Mission Theater Up For Sale; Realtor Claims "the Mission is Going to Explode"

If you have a few million bucks lying around that you don't want to spend on the Dolores Park Church and would rather spend on a lame bar, Mission real estate owner/enemy of Buddhists Gus Murad is apparently selling off all his property on Mission St.  According to Mission Loc@l, Value Giant is pending a sale that's the equivalent of 4.5 million bottles of $1 dish detergent, Medjool and Elements Hostel is listed at $7.1 million, and the New Mission Theater is apparently being sold to “a very hot group from New York” for a measly $2 million.

That hot group is rumored to be the owners of Brooklyn Bowl, which means the Mission could be getting a bowling alley hella soon.  The realtor of the space tells Mission Local, “Let me tell you, you think the Mission’s hot right now, but if this deal goes through the Mission is going to explode.”  That's basically positive proof that we're getting a bowling alley, because the only things that could make the Mission explode are a nuclear holocaust, bulldozing Valencia, or a bowling alley.  My money's on the bowling alley.

As for Medjool?  Hopefully the new owner burns it to the ground and starts anew.

UPDATE: Turns out Mission Loc@l totally botched the story.  Neither Value Giant nor New Mission are up for sale.  Curbed has the correct info.
