Someone over at Reddit witnessed this grisly accident go down at 24th & Mission, noting that there were, incredibly enough, no injuries. Hats off to Muni on this one, I couldn't have fucked up a bus shelter this well if I tried.

This was intentional; it’s part of MUNI’s plan to install bus “shelters” that let in the rain. They may as well build them out of sisal and thatch. That way, when they plow into one they can toss the entire thing into a bin for compost.

Too true. The new shelters look nice, but don’t do nearly as a good a job at sheltering you as you wait for the bus.

The new shelters were bought and paid for by Clear Channel advertising.
As shelters from the elements, rain in particular, they are a miserable failure.
If you look at the design as an example of enhanced advertising (which translates to more money for Clear Channel) they are a huge success.
So fuck you San Franciscans, if you have to wait for a bus in the rain.
These are billboards, not shelters,. and they plan to shove a couple hundred more down your throat.
