Broke-Ass Stuart's Rock-n-Roll Carnival Goes Down TOMORROW

Broke-Ass Stuart and some record company have a big Rock-n-Roll Carnival happening at Public Works tomorrow.  The poster has a lot of words on it, so Stuart simplifies everything for us:

There's 4 bands, DJs, a magician, comedians, burlesque, face painting, fortune telling and Skee-Ball. Dope right? It's gonna be a lot of fun. Plus an hour of sponsored booze by Fireball Whisky. All this for only $7!

Hot damn.  Get your presale tickets here, because it's $10 at the door.

Apparently People Would Even Rather Go To the Castro Street Fair Than Hang Out In Dolores

There were a million things going on in the city this weekend - the government was using our tax dollars to test out their new Burning Man art cars in the sky, everyone was out in straw fedoras Instagramming free music, your supervisor and his fiance were having a roof party in North Beach, we're all suddenly huge Oakland A's fans, and apparently football is still a thing.

But I didn't do any of that because I thought chillin in Dolo was the cool thing to do on the weekends. I put on my cuuutest romper, even made it to brunch in a timely fashion, and headed over to Dolo with my ladypals only to discover that everyone was off YOLOing elsewhere! What gives?! Is Dolo over? Is Speedway Meadows the new Dolo? Did we officially surrender ground to NIMBY Noe Valley families? Am I a NIMBY now?!

Rock Make Music/Art/Food/Booze Festival Returns This Saturday

I've made it over to the Rock Make fest at 18th and Treat for the past couple of years and it's yet to disappoint.  From the sound of it, this year will be no exception.  Nicole from The Bay Bridged fills us in on what we can expect:

There will be all the usual bells and whistles: 2 stages with 12 bands, a long strip of local vendors, inflatable activity for both kids and adults (jousting!), food trucks, and a huge beer garden placed in the center of the layout this year.

Some of the bands playing include Exray's, Twin Steps, John Vanderslice, The Mallard, Will Sprott (of The Mumlers), and plenty more. It's a diverse, local lineup and one of the only chances all year for the all ages community to check out some of these bands, which is something I think is really special.

And here's the schedule:

17th Street Stage (at Treat Avenue & 17th Street)
12:30pm: SF Rock Project
1:30pm: Kids on a Crime Spree
2:30pm: The Mallard
3:30pm: Yalls
4:30pm: Will Sprott (of The Mumlers)
5:30pm: Tartufi
6:30pm: Burnt Ones

18th Street Stage (at 18th Street & Treat Avenue)
1pm: Metal Mother
2pm: Permanent Collection
3pm: Twin Steps
4pm: DRMS
5pm: John Vanderslice
6pm: Exray’s

See you guys there!

Shots From Saturday Night: Endless Canvas

Special Delivery debuted on Saturday night, and we were there to check it out. The event took place in a 36,000 sq ft warehouse around 4th and Gilman in Berkeley. Over the last few months, dozens of Bay Area graffiti artists dedicated much time and energy to covering three stories of walls, ceilings and floors with amazing art. The show was open to the public for one night only on Saturday and we were there to take it all in.

This picture represents about 1/3rd of the line. Worth every second though

The First Annual SF Comedy & Burrito Festival to Both Entertain and Make Us Mildly Gassy

We mentioned back in March that a couple of neighborhood comics were looking at putting on a festival combining the indigestion of burritos and the healing power of comedy.  They took their vision to Kickstarter, raised the money it took to get the fest going, scoured through hundreds of submissions for comics across the country, and made everything official.  The result of their hard work?  The SF Comedy & Burrito Festival, a three day stand-up fest on Oct 11-13th with over 100 performers in six venues.

The festival features a mess of our favorite local comics (including most of the folks associated with The Business), but is also importing a number of heavyweights from out of town, including Matt Braunger from MadTV, late-night veteran Brendon Walsh (who'll be recording his debut album at the festival), and butt-tweeter Sean Patton.  And in true Mission District fashion, you won't have to leave the neighborhood to see any of 'em.  The festival promoters are taking full advantage of the neighborhood's weird assortment of venue offerings, putting comics on stages ranging from classics like Elbo Room and the Dark Room Theater, to lesser-used gems like Esta Noche and The Polish Club.

Now, festival passes might seem a bit expensive at $55 (and they go up from there when early bird pricing is up on Sept. 15th), but keep in mind it's multiple shows spread over 3 nights and there's free burritos (and rumors of complimentary beer).  Also, it's apparently not cheap to book out three venues for an entire weekend.  So do yourself a favor and get tickets now while they're good and cheap.

Tonight at Public Works: Chromatic Exhibition

This show opening at Public Works tonight promises to be pretty cool. From the website:

Do YOU dream in COLOR?

Are you blue? Green with envy? Or better yet, is your love like a red, red rose? Why is it that color inspires and evokes such powerful emotion in the human mind? Come and see for yourself at Roll-Up Gallery’s Chromatic Exhibition. A bold, richly hued group show featuring the kaleidoscopic works of six exceedingly talented local artists.

Fuck the Mall at Indie Mart

The San Francisco Street Food Fest returns to the Mission on Saturday, so we're certain you'll be looking to escape the neighborhood for a bit.  And what a better way to do it than celebrating the 5th anniversary of Indie Mart at Thee Parkside?  They're promising “food and drink and babes,” 100+ local DIY makers selling their hot wares, as well as performances from Ty Segall and Bobb Saggeth.  Also, no organic pig roasts.

Three bucks, starts at noon on Sunday!

Urban Ghost Stories at Muni Diaries Live!

If you're not busy mingling with tweens at Outside Lands this weekend, make your way to Elbo Room Saturday for an evening of spooky bus stories with Muni Diaries Live!.  Muni Diaries' Eugenia Chien assures us it'll be their best one yet, including “a one-woman band who is also a mime, with her girlfriend who she met on Muni, who will be twirling batons and tap dancing.”  (Plus, Eugenia's parents are coming all the way from Taiwan for the event and will mark their first time ever in an American bar, so there'll be that in the crowd.)

Here's the line-up:

  • Broke-Ass Stuart, the king of stylish brokeitude
  • Hiya Swanhuyser, writer and San Francisco culture maven.
  • Jesse James, Muni Diaries Live audience favorite
  • Joyce Lee, spoken word wonderwoman
  • Mahsa Matin and Elyse Bova, with Beat Feet Orchestra
