Seven-Year-Old Mission Mural Destroyed by Vandals

DVTDL? reports:

So someone completely destroyed the mural on 17th street between Alabama and Florida over the weekend. The mural was just over 7 years old, and was made by local artists.

While walking by today I took a quick series of the damage with my cell phone. I  quickly pasted them together to give a sense of the damage. It’s pretty unreal. […]

I think the reason this makes me so upset is twofold: 1) I know several of the artists. 2) There is a huge blank white wall just across the street. Dude(s), tag that instead of the mural.

That is all.

I'll spare you the usual “good vs. bad graffiti” debate, as I'm pretty sure we have our minds made up about that.  Instead, here's a couple of shots of the mural, as seen in better days:

Is this the Facebook Profile of Suspected Mission Rapist Fred Dozier?

As you might have heard, SFPD released the name (Frederick A. Dozier, 32) and mugshot of the suspected Mission Rapist, who is responsible for three notoriously violent sexual assaults that took place along 24th streets in June, November and December.

So is Fred Dozier, employee of the San Francisco Unified School District, obsessive “Crime City” gamer, 49ers fan, and emotional status updater the same man from the released mug shot?

They certainly appear to be one in the same.  This is what Facebook's Fred Dozier posted just hours before the November assault at 24th and Potrero:

And a few days after:

There were also some extremely strange remarks following and prior to the December assault at 24th and Fair Oaks:

In general, his profile is filled with “Crime City” game updates and comments about the Niners (sorted randomly):

If you'd like to help the victims of these assaults, The Fair Oaks Community Coalition is raising money to assist the victims with medical bills and living expenses until they return to work.

Suspected Mission Rapist Captured by SFPD

Word is spreading around Twitter that the serial rapist has been captured, but the SFPD press release is an error 404 page.  We'll update as more details come out.

UPDATE: It seems that SFPD has removed their press release from their website entirely, but Mission Local has some details:

Police said they arrested the suspect at 4:30 p.m. Friday at the Bernal Dwellings after receiving a tip from a resident. It’s unclear at this time whether the suspect lived there.

I know it’s a huge relief for the community that he was apprehended,” Supervisor Scott Wiener said at a police conference Friday evening.

UPDATE II: Here's the press release from SFPD:

On January 6, 2012, at 4:30 PM, San Francisco Police arrested a 32 year-old male San Francisco resident in connection with three sexual assaults which occurred in San Francisco’s Mission District. He was taken into custody at Cesar Chavez and Treat Street by members of the Special Victims Unit and Mission Police Station.

During the first incident, which occurred on June 17, 2011, the female victim had been walking on South Van Ness between 24th and 25th Street when she was approached from behind by the suspect and bear hugged prior to being thrown to the ground. The victim was then dragged approximately 60 feet to an area between a vehicle and a residence where she was sexually assaulted and robbed of her property.

In the second incident which occurred on November 18, 2011, the female victim was also violently attacked from behind along the Mission District 24th Street corridor where she was sexually assaulted and robbed.

The third incident occurred on December 8, 2011 in the vicinity of 24th Street and Fair Oaks. In this incident, the female victim was sexually assaulted and robbed.

With the assistance of a tip from a citizen on the anonymous tip line, investigators from the Special Victims Unit were able to identify a person of interest. This person of interest was later connected to physical evidence located at the scene of the incidents.

The suspect was charged with numerous counts of sexual assault, kidnapping and robbery related to the three incidents.

The suspect’s name will be released at a later time due to pending identification matters.

Find This Bicycle, Get Whiskey Shots

While I recognize this blog isn't Craigslist, I feel somewhat responsible for this bike's disappearance from outside of Bender's last night by way of dumping trays of whiskey shots in front of my friends until awful hours in the morning. So, dearest Uptown Almanac readers, should you find Alissa's black Pake bicycle, we'll reward you by taking you to Bender's and showering you with trays full of whiskey shots.

It's pretty much the only bike in San Francisco I've ever seen with a multicolored chain, so if you see anyone riding a black bike with said chain, you have the green light to tackle them off the bike and liberate it from the clutches of bike thievery.

More details on the bike here.

It Takes a Rape to Get PG&E to Replace a Street Light

Poster by Rich Black. (via SFist)

SFBay.ca reports:

What does it take to get a burned-out City streetlight replaced? How about a vicious rape.

A streetlight at 24th and Fair Oaks was burned out the night of a violent rape that sent a woman to the hospital and left a sidewalk splattered with blood.

Andy Segal, president of the Fair Oaks Community Coalition, told SFBay after Wednesday’s community meeting at St. James Church that the streetlight had been burned out “for a while,” and that neighbors had reported the burned out streetlight without response from The City, PG&E, or the Public Utilities Commission. […]

Supervisor Scott Wiener also said that the light was not operating the night of the attack. The streetlight was hurriedly fixed by PG&E Monday morning, after being contacted by Wiener’s office.

SFPD Release Video of the Mission's 24th St Serial Rapist

A few weeks ago (November 21st to be exact) I woke up to find myself in a crime scene. My block of 25th St was tapped off by uniformed SFPD officers standing guard over a series of green plastic evidence markers along the side walk.  As I left for work, I realized just how huge the crime scene actually was. There were at least 4 more officers on the street, standing watch over similarly tapped off blocks of 25th from Potrero, all the way to Alabama. With all the evidence markers scattered about, my roommates and I chalked it up to a shooting, which is a reasonable assumption when you live in gang injunctioned Norteño territory. The thing is, there were no shell casings, impacts or any other tell-tale signs of urban gunplay. Plenty of our neighbors were outside looking equally puzzled, and none of them recalled hearing anything the night before. I trucked off to work, and had forgotten about it ever since.

It turns out that there were no gunshots. The crime in question was in fact a violent rape that began after a woman was followed along 24th St, and then attacked near Potrero. After strangling and punching her, the suspect raped her, robbed her, and ran off along 25th toward Alabama. The same suspect is believed to have stuck again last week, this time assaulting, raping and robbing a woman near the corner of 24th and Fair Oaks. Just like the November incident, the woman was approached and followed along 24th St, between the hours of 3am and 6:30am. Fair Oaks area residents, being of notably higher income than my own neighborhood, are already using their collective might to leverage improved safety measures out of the incident (such as better street lighting), and made those demands to police at a community meeting held last night.

This morning, the SFPD released surveillance camera footage of the suspect, who is described in both attacks as a black male, around 30, of medium build and between 5'9” and 6'.  As much as I'd like to support going all vigilante on this piece of shit's ass, call the anonymous SFPD line at (415) 575-4444 if you've got tips.

UPDATE I: SFPD have just released a new, more detailed sketch of the suspect.
UPDATE II: SF Appeal reports that the SFPD announced a $25,000 reward
at last night's community meeting.

Updated Police sketch released today.

How the Junkie Stole Christmas!

We know, theft is nothing new, but I saw this wannabe Jesse Pinkman earlier today pull out about a dozen thieved duds from his pants and hoodie and dump them on Capp Street.  Which itself might not be notable, but after he cleared his pants of new clothes, he pulled a Santa hat out of the ass of his pants and put it on his head before stuffing all the clothes in a shopping bag and making off down the street.

Stay classy!

SFPD Storms Four Barrel, Guns Drawn, Following Valencia St. Beatdown

Mission Local follows up:

A scuffle on 15th Street near Valencia quickly escalated into a fight involving at least four suspects and two arrests just after 4 p.m. today. […]

When the victim was down on the ground, the male suspect pulled out a gun. The victim then attempted to take the gun from the male suspect, at which point the female suspect attacked the victim. During the struggle, a shot was fired but no one was injured.

According to eyewitness accounts from workers at PicaPica Maize Kitchen, a crowd gathered around the scene and people attempted to help the victim. Two men reportedly emerged from a vehicle, and one beat the victim with a bat.

And then the attackers fled into Four Barrel…

According to [Four Barrel coffee roaster Tal Mor], the suspects ran to the back room where he was roasting coffee beans and asked if they could get out. When Mor denied them an exit, they turned around and tried to blend in among the 80 or so customers. When officers arrived, they were handcuffed.
