Car Plows Through Zeitgeist's Bike Rack, Multiple Fixies Injuried

Fellow UA author Erika is on the scene at Zeitgeist where a car just barreled through Zeitgeist's bike rack:

“A car just plowed through the bike rack at Zeitgeist and hit a person.  Bike parts everywhere.  At least everyone got drink tickets as emotional compensation.”

Upwards of 30 bikes were destroyed in the accident and the person is “okay” with a broken leg.

A Stern Warning to Beer Thieves

Perhaps more universally loathed than the bike thief is the beer thief: grubby criminals stalking you at parties, bars, and the park that strip you of a whole dollar worth of mediocre inebriation.  They must be stopped, at any cost.  And in states like Florida, you can literally murder someone for accosting your property.  So why not Stand Your Ground and Keep Your Brew Cold with this badass koozie?

Available now at the corner store at 21st and Valencia (not the one that sells organic bananas, the other one).  Works best with a willful ignorance of the law.

BUMmer shooting on 24th and Folsom

It seems there has been an unfortunate uptick of daylight shootings in the Mission in recent weeks, first with the shooting on 24th and Harrison, and now with a shooting across the street from Philz on 24th and Folsom. According to Mission Local, the gang task force has been called in to investigate, but good news, the victim was able to get himself to the hospital without assistance:

The victim got into an argument with two or three men in their early 20s, one of whom shot him in the buttocks, said police. The victim arrived at SF General Hospital on his own accord with non-life-threatening injuries.

Glad to hear he's going to be alright, but I imagine all that money he saved on an ambulance will be spent on re-upholstering his car.

New Terrible Thing That Can Happen to Your Bike in the Mission: Tire Slashing!

Anyone who's biked in this city for more than a week knows that basically our bikes are fucked no matter what we do. No matter how many locks and chains and cables you carry around, someone can still steal it if they really set their mind to it. Either that or they'll disassemble it for you in your absence.

Anyway, last Saturday night I left my bike parked on 15th & South Van Ness for about 90 minutes and someone slashed my rear tire. That's the start and end of the story. I know you're all probably going to be like “Oh well you should've known, leaving your bike parked there! You shouldn't have left it!” but come on, sometimes you just can't bring your bike inside with you. Sometimes you need to park it on the street for a little bit while you go drink jungle juice with your coworkers.

So there you have it - the age-old spirit of this meaningless, stupid and randomly malicious crime is alive and well in the Mission!

Aggro Football Players Pummel Picnickers in Dolores Park

Scoring a point for the perception of football players, it seems as though a rather one-sided fight broke out on Tallboy Terrace yesterday around 6pm when some people asked a group of terrible players to move along, according to a thread on Reddit:

So, I was in Dolores Park today, and I was sitting on the north side, near the center, beneath the trees. I was with six other people, three girls, three guys.

Some guys had been throwing a football around all day, but they were throwing it right by us and they kept hitting us with their football. We'd asked them to move but they just waved us off. Eventually, when one of us got hit with the football again, we told them we'd only give it back if they promised to move down to the field so they wouldn't be hitting us (and everybody near us) every time they missed a catch. They didn't respond to this, they just started wailing on me (I was holding the football when they started). Two of the guys I was with got up and started fighting back, but we were no match for these guys. I was hunched over and they were kicking and punching me on the ground.

About 5 minutes after they left, the cops showed up, took my statement, all that, but they just left.

The victim got a black eye and a bloody nose and claims the attackers were a couple of buff dudes in flat-brimmed hats.

Shooting at 24th and Harrison

Someone on Twitter says it's at 24th and Harrison, but the handle of who posted that is •»» R O S E ««•, so I don't know who to believe.

UPDATE: SF Appeal has more:

The male victim was near Harrison and 24th streets at about 3:20 p.m. when two suspects approached him and one pulled out a gun and shot him, police spokesman Officer Carlos Manfredi said.

The victim was shot in both the upper and lower extremities, and was taken to San Francisco General Hospital to be treated, Manfredi said.

He did not yet know the extent of the victim's injuries.

An employee at a nearby market who asked to remain anonymous said that although there have been shootings in the neighborhood before, they usually occur after the sun goes down.

“Late at night it's another story, but during broad daylight, that's something that doesn't really happen,” the employee said. [Read on]

Similarities Found Between Capp Rape and Previous Attempt, Officer Posted at 19th and Capp

SFPD released this advisory last night:

SFPD has identified the victim of a possible sexual assault which was first reported in a local news journal. The assault, which allegedly occurred in the early morning of hours of Monday, June 18, 2012, near 19th Street and Capp Street, was never reported to the Police Department. An investigation into the incident was initiated after Inspectors from the Special Victims Unit interviewed the author of the “Mission Local” article.

Investigators looking into the June 18th incident have discovered some similarities between the previously unreported incident, and a separate attempted sexual assault case, which was reported to police on June 15th and occurred just five blocks away. On June 15, 2012 on Erie Alley near 13th Street, a woman was approached from behind by two men who grabbed her from behind and attempted to sexually assault her.

In both incidents, the women were assaulted by two men, one short, possibly 5’-04” and the other taller, about 5’-10”. The men were described as being a Hispanic and an African American, or two Hispanic males.

Additional investigative personnel have been assigned to determine if there is any actual connection between these two incidents and Mission Police Station has increased patrols in the area.

The San Francisco Police Department is requesting that anyone having information on either of these incidents contact the SFPD by calling: the Anonymous Tip Line at (415) 575-4444 or Text a Tip via your mobile phone to TIP411 and type SFPD followed by your message. To report a life threatening emergency or crime in progress, call 911.

Early yesterday evening, an officer was also posted at the corner of 19th and Capp handing out the below flyer:

SFPD, SF General Denies Knowledge of Capp St. Rape

Several inconsistencies have emerged in the alleged Monday morning rape at the corner of 19th and Capp.

Originally, a letter circulated by a friend of the alleged victim claimed the rape was reported to the police and the victim received stitches at San Francisco General Hospital:

The rape was reported at SFGH as well as in a police report, and also to SF WAR. If necessary, my friend is willing to provide hospital records with her name blacked out as evidence.

However, both SFPD and SF General claim to have no records of the incident occurring, according to reports in both SF Appeal and Mission Local.

Initially, in spite of not reporting the crime to the police, the victim was quite willing to talk to the press in hopes of preventing future rapes:

The victim, who sounded shaken up by the experience, came forward to Mission Local because she wants to warn others about the incident, she said.

I don’t want someone else in this situation,” she said. “Hopefully we can get people notified and be careful.”

The original Facebook post authored by the victim's friend, which claimed the police and Mission blogs were not responding to the crime, has been since deleted from Facebook.  SF Appeal then contacted said friend, who provided the victim's phone number.  However, that conversation did not yield any answers:

When contacted by the Appeal, however, the woman who answered the phone said she was done talking about the attack, ending the call by saying.

“Lose my number. I'm done with this fucking shit, goodbye.”

We can only hope this was a fabricated story, otherwise this speaks volumes of the competency of SFPD.  (And should it be true, we join SFPD in imploring the victim to report the crime.)

UPDATE: The friend of the victim has denied ever talking to the SF Appeal.

[Updated] Violent Capp Street Rapist on the Loose

According to Reddit, there's a rapist out there:

One of my friends was VIOLENTLY ASSAULTED and RAPED by two men she did not know Sunday night at 19th and Capp. You wanna get graphic? I'm talking stitches in the cervix. With her permission, I've written to the two local mission blogs, asking them to publish this incident, but nothing.

Then today my friend saw two dudes walking down the street matching the descriptions of the attackers. One had scratches on his face that correspond with the attack. Two Hispanic men, between 20-25. One stocky, one lean, one with obvious scratches on his face.

Please help her out. Share this info. At the very least, maybe we can tell women in the area to be on the alert. Any other suggestions?

Note: Uptown was never contacted about this, but we will be sure update if we hear more.

Stay safe, everyone.

Update: Mission Local was able to interview the victim and get more information:

A 30-year old woman told Mission Local she was brutally raped near her house early Monday morning.

The woman was walking home from Bender’s Bar on South Van Ness Avenue shortly before 2 a.m. on Monday when she was attacked from behind by two men on the corner of 19th and Capp streets, she said. […]

“I was heading home and two guys jumped on at me,” she told Mission Local. “Two Hispanic men, one was a tall guy, one was short, it was dark all I could remember happening very quickly.”

After attacking her from behind, the men dragged her to a nearby driveway on Capp Street where she was raped. She tried defending herself by punching and scratching one of the assailants.

“Both grabbed me a couple times, I hit one and they took me to the ground and there is nothing I can do after that.” The two men also took cash she had on her, she said. [Read on]
