Art - The Canvas

Liz, Andy, and the SFMOMA

As the world mourns the loss of Elizabeth Taylor, the most beautiful woman in the world, you can head over to the SFMOMA's website to view their interacitve feature of my personal favorite, 1963's National Velvet. Or, you can go and see this Warhol in real life by heading over to the SFMOMA to view the piece currently on display on their second floor.

Rad New Sirron Norris Mural In Bougie New Taco Shop

Up until last week, Parkmerced was known for absolutely nothing.  It's still known for nothing, but now it's home to Taco Libre, the latest venture from Nombe chef Vincent Schofield, which apparently means something to foodies.  And while I'm certain I'll never bike out there and navigate through the resident rat population, the interior murals by Sirron Norris sure are fine.

Map of Muni Transfers

I love it when artists take the banal and mundane things of our everyday exsistance and transform them into something beautiful and surprising. Take this Muni collage art for example that Etsy user beausefus created after collecting Muni transfers since early 2003. Do you see Golden Gate Park in there? Pretty impressive usage of something that I usually crumble up and throw into my purse.

$225 gets you something a whole lot prettier than what you'll actually encounter after riding Muni for 8 long years.

Slick New Art Project: Dolores Everyday

A local print designer has started a 'collaborative art project' documenting the Dolores Park happenings of 2011.  While Dolores Everyday is off to a slow start (no doubt because of the rain), the project sure is shaping up well:

Take a look at the project archives or submit some stories or photos to doloreseveryday[at]gmail[dot]com to help get the whole thing going.

How About Those Disgusting BART Seat Cushions?

As you might have heard, The Bay Citizen did an investigation last week into the cleanliness of BART seat cushions.  Much to nobody's surprise, the seats were not the most sanitary things in the world:

Fecal and skin-borne bacteria resistant to antibiotics were found in a seat on a train headed from Daly City to Dublin/Pleasanton. Further testing on the skin-borne bacteria showed characteristics of methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA, the drug-resistant bacterium that causes potentially lethal infections, although [Darleen Franklin, a supervisor at San Francisco State University’s biology lab] cautioned that the MRSA findings were preliminary.

High concentrations of at least nine bacteria strains and several types of mold were found on the seat. Even after Franklin cleaned the cushion with an alcohol wipe, potentially harmful bacteria were found growing in the fabric.

I'm not sure what all that means, but I think it's safe to say I can stop telling my friends “I'd rather lick the sidewalk than hang out in Berkeley” and start saying “I'd rather rub my unprotected genitals on a BART seat than hang out in Berkeley.”

Anyway, our pal Donald Tetto also found skin-borne bacteria to be “yuck” and decided to parody Josh Ellingston's 'duck at the turnstile' poster and hang prints up on BART trains (photo above, cuz yer dumb).  Personally, I like Donald's version better (sorry, Josh), but that's probably because it looks like a child version of Slimer.

So, Bay Citizen, when are you going to start testing the soil at Dolores Park?

What's Up With the "Lally's" Doorstep at Zeitgeist?

Wendy MacNaughton, illustrator of the killer “Meanwhile, Mission Bartenders” that appeared in The Rumpus, just published a bunch of b-sides to her blog, including this sketch of the front step into Zeitgeist.  Like Wendy, I've always been curious about what “Lally's” was all about, but figured the bartenders' time would be better spent blowing off another customer's question.  Wendy, on the other hand, got the scoop:

this is the doorstep of what is now Zeitgeist, but was once ice cream shop that doubled as a speakeasy during the prohibition years. ice cream was served upstairs, booze down below. the original tile entry remains.

Not that I don't enjoy a good tamale in a buck with my pint, but ice cream with an speakeasy in the basement?  Sounds like my dream come true.

Migratory Patterns Between Four Bars in One Day

Wendy MacNaughton over at The Rumpus has put together a solid pictorial of mission bars from the eyes of bartenders.  While the whole thing is worth checking out, one of the best parts was the segment dealing with regulars never staying at one bar.  I've done that fourth dance a few times myself, only sub Delirium for another bar that isn't a perpetual nightmare.

More Narwhals!

This narwhal is easily one of my favorite characters found illegally painted on the sides of Mission walls, and it turns out the artist has a flickr acount with some art that is new to me.  Obviously it's a crime that the print of narwhal riding the penny-farthing hasn't be pasted all over town, but I guess there's not much we can do to prosecute this atrocity aside from crying about it on the internet. Cats and Skulls

Gemma Correll isn't a local artist or anything, but I did get turned onto her work from the recently departed Little Otsu press/shop on Valencia, so I figure that's good enough. Anyway, Gemma is now doing monthy cartoons for Emirates inflight magazine, which means there's at least one thing looking at in airline magazines now. [link]
