Local photographer Bhautik Joshi caught up Chad Hasegawa painting his defining layer cake bear in Clarion Alley and shot him some questions about the process:
“If you don't mind me asking - how did you end up with wall space in Clarion Alley? Did you apply?”
“No way - they get in touch with you. It's awesome to get the chance to paint here - so many people come here to see this alley, is so busy.”
“And how does it work? Do you get a commission?”“Nah. Even if they offered something, I wouldn't take it - I'm just honored to be invited to paint here.”

Hasegawa’s bear on Berwick is very nice, so much so that even the writers have left it alone - a miracle! That said, like many local street artists, he latches on to one theme and paints it over, and over, and over, until it chokes. Sure, there’s some variety in the strokes, but basically it’s the same thing in a different location.
I photograph a lot of graffiti/street art, and I’ve been doing it for years, but after a while I find myself walking past some of it because of its predictability.
Yeah, yeah; I know it’s their signature style, etc., but a change-up is fresh and welcome. Anybody with such talent should be able to mix it up and tease the viewer into welcoming more of his/her offering. An example is Amanda Lynn; her Asian space-chick theme is everywhere, but she’ll change it up enough that I’ll go hunting for more. Cuba is another artist who isn’t married to a single style/theme.
