"Weekends and Treehouses" by Young Prisms

Carson Bell just put out this unofficial music video for Young Prisms' “Weekends and Treehouses” full of aging shots of lava, space travel, cats being dropped upside down in slow motion, and some shot of a guy getting a pie in the face.  Good times.

Of course, if you're into local lo-fi music, you can get more at their Myspace or read about how to best enjoy their music (hint: it involves beaches and fireworks, not drugs).

San Frandemonium

The Streets, some British electronica rapper who rhymes about rad things like smashing hotels, conning people with stolen dogs, not being able to do blow because of cameraphones, and getting dumped, filmed the banal moments of his trip to SF last week for his latest music video.  No lyrics on this bad boy, but it's still a solid track.

(via Prefix.  Thanks Bre!)

LAZER SWORD

Yesterday while you were reading about campfires and high fives this record dropped. If you've been going to parties in SF for any amount of time in the last 5 years there is no way you haven't heard of LazerSword and if you haven't well then shit you go to the wrong parties. Both of them have moved on to other cities in the past year but these dudes are still running the SF blapslapturbocrunkrobotbassholesbeepboopglitchkaboom scene. This record has been a long time coming and I highly advise you to cop, they are good dudes and I'm super stoked they finally dropped their full album. Bass heavy shit without going to far into the dubstep wobblehole of hell and some dope rappers featured. The Zackey Force Funk track is no joke too. Anyways check it out cause it's better than whatever the fuck else came out yesterday.

Really Microsoft?

At some point during the chaos yesterday, some Microsoft marketing bros stenciled this ad up and down Valencia Street, letting people know they can rock out to MAROON 5 courtesy of the new Windows Phone.  Now, I don't want to get too into the music snobbery end of this considering I still listen to Third Eye Blind, but Maroon 5? Compared to the last set of bands Microsoft had in town when they debuted a failed phone, they at least used to get bands in town people actually wanted to see.

Anyway, I'm not really sure why the targeted Valencia with this.  Sure, it has foot traffic, but it has the sort of foot traffic that rolls their eyes at this as proof that Microsoft is 'totally lame.'  Plus, didn't these companies learn anything from the whole Zynga sidewalk marketing shitshow?

The Mountain Goats Coming to the Castro Theatre

THIS SOUNDS LIKE FUN:

The San Francisco Film Society is pleased to present a special screening of Mauritz Stiller’s 1919 silent film classic Sir Arne’s Treasure with live musical accompaniment by indie rock icon John Darnielle of The Mountain Goats. […]

Darnielle will be presenting the world premiere of his original score for Sir Arne’s Treasure, commissioned by the Film Society as part of its ongoing project to present classic silent films with original compositions performed by extraordinary contemporary musicians. In recent years, these programs have included 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea with Stephin Merritt, The Lost World with Dengue Fever, The Golem with Black Francis, The Phantom Carriage with Jonathan Richman, Street Angel with American Music Club, Sunrise with Lambchop, A Page of Madness with Superchunk and Jean Painlevé: The Sounds of Science with Yo La Tengo. [more info]

When I was in college, a gang on low-fi musicians and punk kids managed to scrap together enough money to get The Mountain Goats to come to campus.  Anticipating that no one else on the campus of 3,200 had ever heard of the guy (John Darnielle is often the band's lone member), they booked him in a small cafe that couldn't even comfortably fit 75 people.  Of course, fans from all over the Boston area packed the place, but the concert killed despite the uncomfort.  In fact, after the opening band “Manishevitz” (which is a particular eye-roll since I went to a Jewish college) left the stage, John jumped on stage and told everyone to sit down, noting it was “a Catholic thing.”

Anyway, the reason I share this story is that the dude is not only a great lyricist, but he can put on one helluva show even when everyone is sitting down.  I cannot imagine the show at the Castro Theatre will be any different.

Tickets are 'mad expensive' at $22.50, but they just went on sale today for the Dec. 14th show.

For the unfamiliar:

Sierra Frost Has Been Up to Some Good Stuff Lately

It's another crappy day in San Francisco so I'm digging myself into a pit of YouTube.  After watching 15 minutes of Andre Hyland videos, I somehow managed to transition over to local indie music.  Looks like The Downer Party's frontwoman Sierra Frost has started a new band called HATE FACTORY.  Catchy stuff, even if it is a song designed to go viral (via two cute girls singing about social media).

And while on the subject of The Downer Party, they were recently on Backseat Beat, which went on to call fixies “stupid” and describe the band's appearance as “a walking hangover.”  Zing!

greenbelt collective on Valencia

Eddie Codel ran into greenbelt collective giving a performance on Valencia the other night, noting that “they should've gotten a slot at Treasure Island Music Festival.”  I feel like TI might have been a little too big for these guys, but Amnesia or Viracocha seems like the perfect venue for these guys (book 'em!).

Anyway, the audio on this (short) vid isn't the best, so I'd recommend checking out their myspace.  Skip down to “to henry” to get to the good stuff.
