We’ve already said a lot about the new Pop’s, which has been closed for renovations for the better part of a year. Well, as the new owners put the finishing touches on the place, they decided to give The Bold Italic a sneak peak inside to show off the fruits of all their labor.
With a carefully curated selection of “iconic images of pop culture and local legends” adorning its walls, the new-and-improve
The success of the new Pop’s is something Uptown Almanac is very much rooting for. We’ve spent too many drunken nights shooting pool (and later, playing air hockey and pinball) in that place for it not to have a spot in our hearts. I just hope that the patrons who made Pop’s what it was don’t end up feeling like historical reenactors in a place paying tribute to the days when you could score a cheap beer/shot combo within its walls.
You can check the bar out for yourself at their opening on September 18th.

Looks fine, I’ll go there. I mean, this ain’t Oakland, Detroit, Portland, our dive bars are going to be places where rich people go to act. I’m fine with it, that is until I eventually leave

That’s serious statement on how good New Pop’s will be – the whiskey selection I mean. Jack Black is pretty awful fuelling assholes since the 1890’s. Four Roses yellow label is pretty weak. It is widely accepted as just OK. It really is the Jameson of bourbon. It will not scare away the hoople heads. I can just imagine stupid arrivistes upgrading from their usual four roses to Jack Black to celebrate their next round of funding.
If New Pops was serious they’d stock Old Overshoes rye and Old Grand-dad bourbon by the pallet load and then whatever top shelf whiskey that is still available during the current whiskey drought.

Bummer, used to like this place a lot. Sorta speaks to who they’re trying to attract when they give the exclusive to a Hayes Valley-based USA Today subsidiary like Bold Italic instead of maybe one of the local Mission blogs that write about Pop’s like once a week. Honestly would have preferred the mixologist / mason jars / edison bulb set-up that we were all dreading to this Colonial Williamsburg thing. Also whatever though, there’s like 1,000 bars in Oakland that are pretty much the old Pop’s and I live there now. Hope whoever this is supposed to be for enjoys it.

That’s Chad’s Louisville slugger that us last generation of bartenders used, hah.

I wrote about pops before it was cool.
