Barry McGee Special Exhibition Opens This Afternoon

Barry McGee (if you don't know who he is, go read up) is going to be a part of a special exhibition that opens at 3pm (until 6pm) this afternoon and you'll most certainly want to be there:

Gallery Paule Anglim is pleased to announce a special exhibition by Barry McGee at the gallery's off-site space at 1717 17th Street in San Francisco's Potrero Hill district. Contemporary Arts Centre describes the community acknowledging its present and past: an installation featuring work by McGee and fellow invited artists.

Moving easily across the boundaries of street art, historical High Art, private/anonymous art practices and museum-sanctioned collections, Barry McGee has created and collaborated on artworks appreciated by a broad audience. Acclaimed for his work as a graffiti artist and for his installations in galleries, museums and art festivals around the world, the artist crafts a language that resonates as a shared public experience as well as on a private intimate scale. Addressing social concerns of urban life, yet elaborating a unique personal style, McGee's works focus on a shared humanity, one painstakingly hand-detailed, finely-painted image at a time.

If you miss today's opening, the exhibition runs April 14th to May 19th and will be open Thurs-Sat., 11am-5pm.

Pac-Man Collage

This is only a sampling of all the Pac-Man characters and icons currently painted and glued to the Valencia Art Wall.  To see the rest, you'll have to head over and see it for yourself.

(Also, apologies for the desecrated image of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson in the second picture.  I'm sure that sonuvabitch would shoot himself if he knew some punk compared him to Nixon.)

Vag Rabbit

I don't know, man.  I've spent a couple of evenings examining vaginas, and this is no vagina.  It doesn't look much like a rabbit, for that matter.  Maybe some dude with hairy palms flashing a peace sign.  Or an upside down portrait of Kang and Kodos.  Hell, I'd even entertain this being an inverted gingerbread man grabbing his junk.  But a vag rabbit?  Naw, man.  No fucking way.

Is Sirron Norris Not an Artist?

A bunch of Sirron Norris' murals around 20th and Bryant were destroyed over the weekend, with one shitty tag claiming his work “is not art.”

Mission Local emailed Norris about it and got this back:

At this point, I don’t much care — nothing is safe anymore. It doesn’t matter if you write graffiti or paint a youth-based or community-based mural — it’s all up for grabs in this very disrespectful world we now live in. These kids, just like the Internet, have these anonymous passive-aggressive ways of being cruel and it sucks. But I accept it, and as an adult of 39 years, I can’t go around battling little kids.”

Yup. It has most certainly been a bad year for Mission murals.
