At 5:15pm in the evening on Monday, a 5-year old and his babysitter were struck by a car at the corner of 37th and Fulton. Both were taken to San Francisco General Hospital and are expected to survive their injuries.

Three hours later and across town at Fifth and Market, a cyclist was hit by a taxi. The cyclist was also taken to SF General, is also expected to survive.

At 6:10am this morning, another pedestrian was injured near Battery and Sacramento, and also taken to SF General with “injuries that were not life-threatening.”

Last year, 2013, was the worst year for pedestrian deaths since 2007, with 20 killed.  Increased traffic pressure thanks to a surging economy is cited as a reason for the increase. “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times,” indeed. Depending on which of the two cities you live in, you can choose to either blame the victims with the #didntlook hashtag suggested by ABC7’s Dan Noyes, or you can lobby to reform the system by promoting the #VisionZero effort at City Hall.

Or, you know, maybe just take up knitting?

Update: Another cyclist was hit at the corner of Market and Hyde, making five people hit by cars in less than 24 hours. “The bicyclist has been transported to a hospital with injuries that are not believed to be life-threatening,” according to the SF Appeal.
