Mission Bowling Club

Monday is Soul & Bowl Night at Mission Bowling

I have fond memories of disco bowl nights from high school—those air-conditioned evenings when all the cool kids would sneak beers in the parking lot and I'd just bowl.  Sure, the music was awful, because disco music is awful, and I never cracked 120.  Also the fog machine left me coughing fits and a weird desire to move to San Francisco.  But those nights were Good Times.

It seems Mission Bowling Club has gotten hip to the disco bowl phenomenon, only updated it with significantly more tolerable music.  Plus, Mission Bowling has alleviated their notorious steep prices with happy hour specials and other such discounts.  From Mission Bowling:

SOUL & BOWL is a curated soul music series that we host every 1st and 3rd Monday of the month, filled with soulful jams and fantastic food, drink, and bowling specials (Free shoes rentals!).

Starting this Monday, September 2, we'll have additional specialty cocktails for the night curated by Daniel Hyatt (formerly of Roka Akor). He's crafting some great drinks like the Sam and Dave and the Juke Joint Punch. We're so excited to try them!

Additional specials include:
Templeton Rye + Tecate $7
Free shoe rentals!
Lots of dancing!

Plus, it's the last day of the Burning Man Rapture, so take full advantage.

Mission Bowling Club is on its Way!

Mission Local brings us the good news:

There’s no opening date just yet, but strikes are in the Mission Bowling Club’s [17th and South Van Ness] near future.

Apart from some finishing touches, the staff of 50 has been hired and trained.

Everyone is now just waiting to hear that the venue has passed the last inspections before they open the doors to the neighborhood’s first bowling alley.

Hurrah!

And what is the operation going to look like?

[Anthony Myint, whose operating the kitchen] sees this area of the Mission as a new micro-hood, and thinks someone should come up with a name for it. A few blocks away, new businesses have recently opened, including Southern Pacific Brewery, and Flour + Water’s market is scheduled to open soon.

The bowling alley’s menu will include the popular Mission Burger, as well as bar snacks such as homemade beef jerky and food on sticks.

Happy hour will be from 3 to 6 p.m., and dinner service from 6 to 11 p.m. on weekdays. On Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, the alley will close at midnight. Prices will range from $35 to $55 per lane per hour.

Don't worry, Anthony, I'm sure the Bold Italic is already on the case.

The Future of Mission Bowling Club Rests on the Board of Supervisors Amending Antiquated Liquor License Law

The Examiner brings us news that the anticipated Mission Bowling Club on 17th needs the Board of Supervisors to amend a 15-year-old liquor license moratorium in order to move forward:

Bowling and boozing — two inherently related activities — are the subject of city legislation designed to clear the way for a proposed new six-lane alley and bar-restaurant in the Mission district.

Supervisors Jane Kim and Scott Wiener want to tweak the planning code to make way for the new locally owned business, which wouldn’t otherwise be allowed because past problems with the area’s drinking culture prompted restrictions on new liquor licenses.

The liquor license restrictions mentioned were made way back in 1996 to help combat gang violence, preventing new bars, grocery stores and corner stores from selling booze.  Undoubtedly the reasons for the moratorium are not as pressing today as they were, so why not just strike down the restrictions altogether so the Mission can get more bowling alleys and breweries instead of boring condos?

I would also like to give a quick shoutout for Supervisor Wiener for once again filling in for The Mission's absentee Supervisor David Campos.
