A Different Kind Of Foodie Corridor

The Mission Is About to Get Another Grocery Store

The Mission may soon have another grocery store to call its own. The owners of Haight Street Market are planning to open “Gus’s Community Market” in an industrial space on the corner of 17th and Harrison.

SocketSite reports:

As proposed, the 10,000 square-foot market “and accessory restaurant” would be roughly half the size of a smallish Whole Foods, and twenty (20) of the building’s existing off-street parking spaces would be dedicated to the store.

Currently zoned for Production, Distribution, and Repair (PDR) rather retailing, San Francisco’s Planning Commission will need to approve a requested change in use for the grocery to open, the hearing for which has been scheduled for January 15.

Just a few short blocks away from Rainbow Grocery, Whole Foods, Safeway, and Foods Co, the decision to drop another grocery store in an area already dense with them seems puzzling—perhaps even more so when one considers that the DeLano’s on South Van Ness has remained empty since late 2010.

But with an outside counter (depicted below), Gus’s Community Market may at the very least become a favorite hangout spot for people grabbing a bite at the taco truck parked semi-permanently across the street.

Wouldn’t it be cheaper, easier, and more convenient to take up the old Cala space on South Van Ness?!

I live right there and the intersection will definitely need a stop light already lots of accidents at the corner. If the traffic and parking crush around Rainbow market is any indication that corner will be a nightmare. Finally Munchery are moving their trucks and we get another parking nightmare *sighs

Why, does everyone in the Mission drive to the store?  The existing Haight location doesn’t seem to have much traffic trouble, especially compared to the mess at Whole Foods or TJ’s.

And I love Haight Street Market - almost everything I eat comes out of that store.

People drive to Rainbow because the entrance is under the freeway and walking under the freeway sucks.

Who is Gus?

Heels, dresses, shorts, a blonde… I don’t think that depiction was set in SF.

the ‘S after Gus is pretentious and annoying.

Yeah, there’s certainly no long standing precedent for using the possessive case in the name of a retail store.

Gus is the matriarch’s name who started the business in 1981. If its anything like the Haight Street Market with a full service deli and meat department the neighborhood has nothing like that!

If you don’t know where good butchers and delis are than I doubt you know this neighborhood, but maybe you know what is in the Haight

We have enough food Markets in this area already. This area is now getting so congested with traffic it’s awful. Since Best buy came into the neighborhood it’s really not safe if your walking around.

And the Cyclist in the area now. Don’t even get me started  their terrible behavior.

Ambitious idea, but really, does the mission need another market now?

These guys get THE EXACT same produce you get in chinatown and then turn it around and charge almost twice as much. They pulled the same crap at their haight location.
