Doubled Rents Forces Cafe Que Tal Out of Business

Eater brings us the sad news of another relaxed neighborhood institution biting the dust:

A tipster notes that the cafe's landlord has doubled the rent with only two weeks' notice, forcing Que Tal to close up shop. They'll be liquidating their appliances and supplies this weekend.

Que Tal had the second dreamiest ceiling in the Mission (next to Philz's, of course), and their food wasn't too bad, either.  Bummer.

Has Philz reached 11 cafes yet? Maybe they can move in and pay triple the rent!

HAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

So sad. Watch out Lone Palm……….

This sucks for a lot of reasons. Namely that this corner doesn’t need any more overpriced, mediocre restaurants that will go out of business in less than a year. I’m actually surprised that they’ve lasted this long given that the building’s owner is supposedly completely crazy. Years ago I remember hearing stories about how she would constantly entice businesses to open up shop, only to harass and bully them until they went out of business. I will miss my Que bagels. I kind of hate it when I hear other people say this, but now I’m going to say it too: our city is starting to go down the shitter.

Sounds like it could be time for you to move on.

Yeah, sadly there is an element of truth to that. San Francisco is awesome, but every time something like this happens it feels like the City loses a little bit of its soul, a little bit of what it makes it the greatest city in the world. Sigh.

Well, hold on, though. Various shrill folks may say the City is “going down the shitter,” but they say that’s happening for grand-scale economic reasons (the G-word). You’re indicating that this is something quite different - an idiosyncratic landlord who has a long history of oddball practices. Not a problem of market forces, but a nasty person who has done, and would do, the same thing in the absence of tech busses driving the streets. That’s not a systemic, citywide problem, that’s one bad apple. The apocalypse may be coming, but that doesn’t mean everything is a sign of it’s approach!

People have been saying the city is going downhill since I first arrived in the 80s. The main difference these days is that the changes seem to happen faster. But maybe that’s because I’m going downhill and can’t keep up like I used to. HA.

Viva San Francisco!

crazy landlords exist despite economic changes, Jeffrey’s left its dream spot by DP because their landlord was nuts, and the space still sits empty because prospective tenants are becoming informed….

I worked or the landlady once. I’ll never forget when she asked me why i looked at her like she was crazy.

When the neighborhood that i moved into changes, it makes me sad. Even if its natural. Change can be bad but hey, maybe a salad place opens in its space. Long Live Que Tal!

I am so sorry to hear this…loved the people, the coffee, the food…my daughter  loved elena’s  potato  rosemary soup…i worked up the  street at  ’mixed  media’  salon with john sasso…que tal was  definetely the  spot we went to between clients…good luck  to them  in their next adventure…
