The only possible excuse for this would be ruining your shoes by stepping in a fresh hobo landmine full of broken crack pipes and used needles on your way to Civic Center. Even then, your socks should survive (This is why urban flip flops are idiotic). Either way those little piggies are now contaminated with the same substances.

Plus, if you lose a foot taking the escalator barefoot, you’ll wake up for the rest of your life with irrefutable proof that you are in fact a colosal jackass. And some poor soul will have to dig your toes out of an escalator. A solid bummer for everyone involved.
