TROUBLEMAKERSWhen I think of the throngs of young drunk hooligans merrymaking down Valencia every weekend, all hootin' and hollerin' and making a gawddamned ruckus, I think of gourmet cheese. One other neighbor agrees with that and took their complaint right up with the California Alcoholic Beverage Control, which denied Mission Cheese with a permit to stay open as late as 10pm.
Mission Cheese owner Sarah Dvorak explains in a statement to Mission Local:
Our current beer & wine permit only allows us to serve until 8 pm. We had to wait one year from the date our license was granted to apply to amend our hours. We want to stay open until 10, at least on Friday & Saturday evenings. We are constantly turning away disappointed potential customers when we close at 8. Some even think we’re joking when we say we are closed.
Last week we were visited by the SFPD who told us they were happy to have us in the neighborhood & should have no trouble getting the extra hours. Today I received a call that they will be denying our request because one individual in the 100 ft radius believes our business to be disruptive as is. Apparently one person is enough to deny the request.
Don't worry though, Sarah can take it up with a judge, who'll reexamine the case and consider making an exemption. Until then, enjoy your quiet, cheese fart-free streets.

Sounds like someone in the neighborhood is lactose intolerant.
I hate myself.
I love you.
The same thing happened to the Attic two years ago in regarding to having DJs at the bar. It's completely FUCKED up that some asshole who decides to live in a busy city area gets to dictate what EVERYONE else in the community, including their own neighbors is allowed to use a space for, especially when it's something as reasonable as this.
There should really be an oversight where if one neighbor complains, five neighbors or whatever can veto the complaint as it's their neighborhood too, and depending on the circumstance, one person can ruin it for everyone else.
FTA:
In other words, ABC wants to make it illegal to drink in the Mission, period.
Well I think there may be a point to it, all this nice drinking and eating establishments are driving out the Mission's historic drug culture. We need to preserve the Mission's unsavory reputation for filth and junkies - it's cultural hegemony not to.
So it sounds like maybe it's the outdoor pato that is the problem? I've trying to figure out who lives w/in 100 feet of there, and I keep coming back to the condos that are above the restaurant. I could see one of them objecting to having people outside drinking. I don't agree, and I could be wrong, but that seems to make sense to me. There are a lot of strollers in that building and maybe they have a child/ need some sleep. Who knows?
What do they mean by "outdoor patio" anyway? The sidewalk seating?
Anyway, if someone needs sleep they should not be living on Valencia in the first place. Zero excuses for that one.
stroller drivers love wine! probably even more than before they/we were driving strollers! cummon now!
It'd be worth a shot to contact our Sacramento reps (Mark Leno and Tom Ammiano) to see if they can put in a good word with the ABC.
ah SF. where one loudmouthed asshole can ruin a business by whining loudly. death to nimbys
Seems more of a CA problem than an SF one in this case.
