SF Gets Skateboard "Security Racks"

Doug over at Ice Tubes spotted this curious device in a USF parking lot the other day and wondered how the hell anyone would lock their board to this thing.  Thanks to the magic of the 'world wide web', Doug discovered that anyone skating and carrying a padlock can put their board between the rack and padlock the rings together, apparently keeping your board safe from thieves (unless they take your trucks off, of course).  Even though I doubt anyone ever actually uses these things, it's at least a step towards legitimizing the sport (which I'm sure will infuriate everyone, skaters included).

The amount of time spent designing this, reviewing it and getting it approved, not to mention the fabrication and installation must be worth a year’s worth of tuition.

Under what circumstances would a skater leave a board anywhere other than their home?

If anything, this is a step toward banning skateboards from being brought into lecture halls.

There is nothing practical about “parking” your skateboard in a parking lot for cars, and then walking to class. If cyclists have bike racks located outside of and reasonably near classrooms, why would you put this in a parking lot?

yeah but cyclists also have bike racks installed inside parking garages as well. depending on the neighborhood and lot, they’re a lot more secure than a bike rack on the street. i don’t skateboard, but i can imagine a similar argument - watched lot vs street.

that’s a pretty reasonable argument for the sake of liability and theft prevention. the whole thing still seems misguided to me; in college the whole reasoning behind skating to class instead of biking was that you used a vehicle that took you directly to the door of your class, picked it up, and walked inside. No spending time to fight for a bike rack spot that was still a five minute walk from your final destination.

I’m still clamoring for back pack racks, why the fuck do i have carry my bag with me when all i need are my lunch, 3 notebooks, my laptop and the 4+ books inside.

Aren’t those called Lockers?

uh…i’m pretty sure skateboarding in the USF garage is illegal. how are skateboarders supposed to arrive at the rack?

on a side note, I believe the rack should be labeled “Longboard rack” and have a sandal storage pouch on the side as well.

How will everyone know I’m a skater if I lock up my board?

Oh, they’ll know. Don’t worry. They’ll know.
