7x7's Team of Foodie Mavericks Declare Chipotle the 5th Best Carne Asada Burrito in SF

I recognize that half of what 7x7 publishes is ripe for ridicule, but this disaster takes the cake.  From 7x7's "Top 7 Super Carne Asada Burritos in San Francisco":

5. Chipotle - 1 ¼ lbs ($8.71)

The heat was on, said [Sunset Magazine's Margo True], for this chain’s take on a burrito. Their version was “packed with lots of rice, guac, and fire. Zesty!” But it had too much starch for most. “Where are the beans?” said [Burrito Eater's Charles Hodgkins]. “Oh, here hidden behind the damn rice.” Farr called the meat “tender” but wished there was more char. Hodgkins said the guac was “top shelf” but that the cheese seemed absent. [SPQR chef Matthew Accarrino] deemed the burrito “right in the middle of the pack.”

Let that soak in.

Ludicrous.

When I first got this issue of 7x7 (shut up, it was free) I was ready to burn it after seeing that they'd given Chipotle the #5 spot. WTF were they thinking?! Why did they even review Chipotle in the first place?

But now that I've thought about it, I realize two things:
1. They did not try very many burritos.
2. There are plenty of burrito joints that are much worse than Chipotle in SF.

So what this really means isn't that Chipotle is great, it's that there's some really fucking vile burritos in San Francisco.

Well, except the the article is labeled as being a review of the TOP Seven carne asada burritos in SF. As opposed to a review of 7 carne asada burritos chosen at random or something.

here is some real talk: the guac is pretty good. chipotle food's dept is run by a james beard rising star winner (nate appleman). i'd trust hodgkin, farr, and/or accarrino's palate over anyone frequenting this website (including me).

...says the vegan. seriously though, the list only exists so people will link to it - not to discover the TRUE BEST BURRITO!!!!11!!!

(and don't you want 7x7 readers to stay in areas with a Chipotle?)

The Sonia Show's picture

If the list had been a top 8 then Taco Bell's Fresco Steak Burrito Supreme would have been on there.

rice is not something to brag about in a burrito.

as for chiptole being spicy, yeah I fucking doubt that bullshit. When it comes to spicy SF runs with the softest of tongues. I don't give a shit who works for this whitebread spot, call me when they stop selling white rice with their bullshit ass food.

And who the fuck gets burritos with whole beans? If you don't fuck with refried you're suspect out the gate.

MrEricSir's picture

I get whole beans because I'm a veg, and the refried tend to be fried in lard.

Herr Doktor Professor Deth Vegetable's picture

Refried Beans in burritos suck.

Frijoles Negros forever.

Enfrijoladas is the only time black beans are acceptable in any format

Herr Doktor Professor Deth Vegetable's picture

Well, that's just crazytalk.

The first rule of the best burrito is you do not talk about the best burrito.

I really think we need to have an Uptown Almanac TOP SEVEN BEST COMMENTS smackdown. I nominate the above for inclusion.

This is crap! The best burrito in SF can be found at SFO in the bag I bring with me back after a visit SoCal.

Ugh, you know what I mean. Las Golondrinas FTW!

Ha!

I'm amazed the Guerrero/Duboce KFC/Taco Bell hasn't tried stuffed fries into a burrito yet.

Burrito Justice's picture

grrr, "stuffing"

Jen's picture

Don't worry, dude, you were just referring to the new KFC Stuffed Fries. Try putting THOSE into a burrito.
