Revisiting 1930's Bay Area Motorsports Culture

Oakland Speedway, Nov. 1931.

Oakland Speedway, Nov. 1931.

Dirty Dave recently scanned a bunch of old photos from his “obviously badass” Great Uncle Harvey documenting Depression-era motorcycle and motorsports culture in the Bay Area.  The collection is full of unknown badasses, midget cars (there used to be an indoor midget race track in Downtown Oakland), a Warren Jalliano Special, and other good stuff.

Now if we're lucky, Burrito Justice will be able to use this source material for something epic.

Here’s an old poster for the Oakland midget track. Hey, it was The Nation’s Most Scientifically Designed Sports Stadium! (With 62º banks, I certainly hope so.)

The “Oakland Speedway” and “Oakland Stadium” (midget cars) were actually in Hayward, not sure if there was another in Downtown Oakland.

Anyway, they tore it down in 1955 to make the Bayfair Mall. Having no luck with old maps, might want to ping Eric Fischer as he knows that side of the Bay way better than I do.
