Mission Murals

A Collage of Artists at 24th and Bartlett

In late January, the mural space on 24th and Bartlett, behind Campfire Gallery, got a fresh upgrade from Elliott C Nathan.  This time, the garage doors are a collage of portraits of artists and mixed with works from Nathan, swatches of color, and other clippings, laid on top of torn pages.

Nathan tells us a bit more about the piece:

My intention with this ever-changing mural space was to commemorate some artists who have influenced the manner or style in which I create, as well as those important to SF and Mission culture. My original plan for this rendition was to paste up these artists along with a collage of the dictionary, pages from books describing how to create art, and random drawings, and characters I’ve created. The portraits are cut from altering sides and spread atop these different aspects of art and language to suggest the blending of the creators, art methodologies, and things created.

He recently released a timelapse of the mural’s creation (embedded below), and you catch his next show opening Saturday night at 8pm at Hayes Valley’s Oxenrose.

SLAMPOP! By Elliott C Nathan Opens Tonight

You've undoubtedly seen Elliott's work on Valencia's art wall or his iconic squid offering up free cursed pennies, and now you can see it on the walls of Hangr16 on 16th.  Elliott briefly filled us in on what he's been up to:

I've spent the past year creating tons of new paintings and concept pieces… it's all coming together for my show “SLAMPOP!” at Hangr16.  It's going to be my biggest yet.

It features:
-Lots of wild pop paintings I have been working on this past year
-Limited edition silk screen tshirts of my work “Angular San Francisco
-Mini Skateboards that I made for Sunken Monkey
-Functional 2D Boomboxes (awesome for the park or carrying around on the street)
-SLAMPOP! Microbrew by my friends at Apostrofides Microbrewery

They'll also have some live music and some repurposed Muni transfer art.  See everyone there!

Mission Open Studios Highlights: Elliott C Nathan's Pop-Up Studio

It's Mission Open Studios time again, meaning hundreds of neighborhood artists will be opening their studio and gallery doors to the general public, giving us a weekend-long art walk of sorts.  And while many of the names and venues participating this round will be familiar to Open Studios veterans, Elliott C Nathan's (who you might remember from yesterday's tax comic or unlucky pennies) temp space at the corner of 24th and Bartlett will be a one-time deal this month and this month only.

Elliott fills us in:

I am taking over 24th and Bartlett for this weekend only; it's a pop-up open studio happening Friday evening, then Saturday and Sunday 10am - 6pm. Outside my regular work, I am also building an interactive piece that people will be able to draw all over.  I will also be featuring my line of Sunken Monkey mini skateboards.  Here's a time lapse video showing the creation of the boards:

Whoa. Sick rooftop view of the city, Elliott. (And sick boards, too)

Anyway, if you haven't already, get familiar with the Mission Open Studios calendar for this weekend and make a note to swing by Elliott's pop-up studio.

How to do Taxes

Mission artist Elliott C Nathan recently launched a new comic Ellio McHelium's Guide to the World, which is sorta like Clarissa Explains It All, only from the perspective of a 7-year-old boy whose primarily concerned with cooking hotdogs and thieving his drunk mother's credit card.  Do give it a look.
