Another Banksy Gets Buffed

Banksy's “This is where I draw the line” on the side of the Red Vic got buffed a week or so ago after being up for nearly a year.  Now, I'd probably be more alarmed about this if I ever went up to the Upper Haight to admire street art.  Or if I ever went up to the Upper Haight for any reason at all.  But what amazes me about this particular instance of street art disappearing is that people have already begun 'defending' his work's memory—or at least going up against the property owner—as if it was some sort of human rights abuse to cover it up.  “Nobody's finished we aint even begun.”  Oh shittt, I can see the property owner pissing his pants all the way from the Mission.

Fresh LANGO Mural Going Up in the Haight

If I had to make a list of my 10 favorite murals in SF, LANGO's 22nd Street Medusa mural would probably wind up somewhere on that list.  And lucky for us, it looks like LANGO took the opportunity to take his rad mural and make a really big version of it up on the corner of Haight and Masonic.  Clearly it's not done yet, but hey, looks good so far.

Get Yer House Painted!

Local artist Andy Stattmiller has brought his rad style from his “Take a ride on the 49…” paintings and is applying it to SF's beeeeeeeautiful architecture.  Best of all, he'll paint a portrait of your pad if you give him the requisite amount of cash.  If your house is a Victorian in the Haight, you'll be left with a lovely reminder of your fine San Francisco digs and the Humboldt County dirtbags who defecate on your doormat for years to come.  And if you live in a fancy new condo, you'll have yourself a pricey reminder of how dull the exterior of your $600,000 mistake is.

Get the details on how to commission a painting over at Andy's blog.

Which Neighborhood Has the Dumbest Bloggers?

Earlier this month, Google announced a new advanced search tool that  helps filter websites by the complexity of their content called “Reading Level.” Clearly we don't know what algorithm Google uses to rate the blogs (perhaps we can blame the commenters for the crappy results?), but who doesn't love comparing a few San Francisco blogs?

Apparently the subtle complexities of PBR, Four Loko, bicycles, and the richly in-depth analysis of burritos were lost upon Google because according to its new ”Reading Level,” the Mission is home to the dumbest bloggers in San Francisco.

Although some of our life choices may prove otherwise, it seems that #TEAM_UppyAlmy isn't the dumbest blog in San Francisco. Congratulations Mission Mission.

2% more literate? Must've been all of that wikileaks coverage that really put us over the top.

Looks like Mission Loc@l is the smartest blog representing the Mission. Must be the writer's nicely uniformed profile pictures. With no writers drunk or wearing a Pooh Bear costume in their photos, these people obviously take blogging very seriously.

And how did the other neighborhood blogs reading levels fare?

Looks like the Tenderloin, mostly known for its homeless, drug addicts, prossies, schizos, oh yeah, and UC Hastings Law School students is smarter than 2/3's of the Mission blogs.

The Lower Haight's HoodscopeSF, slightly dumber than the TL, slighty smarter than the 2/3's of the Mish.

Haighteration leads the pack for the gutter punks, retired hippies, and USF students that characterize the Haight.

The Marina fares well with 7x7. But really, how complex are their posts? About as complex as this.

Finally, San Francisco, your smartest blogging neighborhood according to Google's ”Reading Level” is Noe Valley. Congrats Noe Valley SF for being pretty average, but a whole lot better than the rest of us.

Fuck You. I'm Hungover as Shit and Love Spraypaint

Read the goddamn title of the post.  It's a wall covered in pink rabbits in the Haight, which is a neighborhood that represents some sort of hellish dystopian San Francisco overrun by Humboldt kids begging for a dime and not paying for shitty ice cream at Ben & Jerry's.

"Love in the Lower Haight" Mural Project Still Going Strong

If you haven't heard about the mural project going on at Haight and Laguna, the Examiner had a pretty good writeup a couple of weeks ago:

Called “Love in the Lower Haight,” the mural by the Lower Haight Mural Collective will stretch 100 feet up Haight Street from Laguna Street and 75 feet on Laguna.

The mural is meant to increase the identity of the neighborhood and showcase local artistic talent on a wall that is often covered in graffiti, said Thea Selby, president of the Lower Haight Merchants and Neighborhood Association.

“We are different than surrounding neighborhoods,” Selby said. “We’re heavily invested in art. Visitors will be able to see this and we will be able to bring the community together.” [full story]

I really don't see how their being “heavily invested in the arts” makes them different than surrounding 'hoods, you know, like the Mission or the TL.  But hey, more murals in The City is a great thing, and the pics uploaded yesterday by “saucemeisterq” indicate that this mural is shaping up quite nicely.
