GO TO THIS: Broke-Ass Stuart’s 10 Year Anniversary of Living in SF

We all know and love Broke-Ass Stuart (if you're somehow unfamiliar with the man, do go brush up by reading his site and/or watching this short), and his parties never fail to impress.  So do yourself a favor and wish Stu and SF a happy 10-year anniversary together tomorrow night at Public Works.

Here's the pitch:

Just because you’re young, broke and beautiful doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be able to put on your nicest duds and have a spectacular night on the town. When was the last time you spent just $3 to see some of the best musical acts in the Bay, fight cancer, drink free booze and slurp free oysters? That’s what we thought.

Fuck!

From what we're told, the band Social Studies is going to be headlining the shindig (and knowing Stuart, there'll probably be other surprises up his sleeves).  So head over to his website for info on how to RSVP (because you're not going without doing so) and make sure you clear your Thursday night calendar of plans.  Also, dress accordingly.

Balloonacy!: The World's First Ever Interactive Balloon Immersion

If you haven't already made your way over to Million Fishes to check this out, today is your last chance.  Our friend George fills us in on the details:

Come rediscover the playful side of life as you wade your way through a music-filled, pitch black sea of thousands of balloons that respond to your movements with ethereal glows of light! Its part dance party, part existential crisis, and ALL FUN!

And it's FREE.  Get there before 10pm, folks.

What Would You Do to Save The Lusty Lady?

We heard through the grapevine this morning that the famed Lusty Lady is in distress — their head Madam has quit, as have their entire Board of Directors, leaving them with no real direction or financial aid. Sandy Bottoms, a former member of the board/dancer, blogs about the situation going down:

Over the past few weeks a giant schism has formed within the cooperative regarding the future of our historic and beloved business, which is resulting in a wave of workers, including myself, walking away. I want it to be known that the Lusties leaving the Lady are NOT walking away from it's rich memory of camaraderie and perseverance during cooperization or landmark status of being the only unionized sex work business' within the United States, but simply from a disintegrating system and hostile working environment within a failing business model.

Sources close to the Lusty Lady and their cadre of Lusties say that to stay alive, they need not only some investments (ahem, $$$), but also some legitimate marketing and some new talent. So if you have some loose cash lying around, are good with Adobe Illustrator or hate your job and have always dreamed of getting naked and shaking your booty, please contact them via Facebook, and do what you can to save this one of a kind San Francisco establishment!

**UPDATE** You can donate directly to the Ladies of Lust HERE to help them with their cause.

Celebrate Cinco de Mayo by Seeing Some Stand-Up Comedy

Host Chris Thayer delivers the pitch:

What better way to celebrate Cinco de Mayo than to completely ignore it by attending a makeshift comedy show at a used clothing store?

Other than dialing up a mariachi band from a glorified cab company and/or going to Chevys (p.s. - I love Chevys), I can't think of anything that could possibly top this.  8pm at Afterlife Boutique, people.

Mobile Sex Confessional Headed to Lost Weekend Video

San Francisco is one giant twisted sex story, and Salon's sex writer Tracy Clark-Flory is capturing our sordid saga. How? By filming people's “juicy” stories in a guilt and fear-free mobile sex confessional, all for an upcoming web series.

Oh yes.

Liam from Salon fills us in on what they're looking for when they set up shop at Lost Weekend Video:

Instead of pure titillation, we're going for a range of stories revolving around all aspects of sex, not just the dirty details of the physical act itself (but a bit of that too). During our shoot at Mission Bowling Club on Monday, we found that people were more than willing to share personal stories about everything from being chastised for masturbating on the playground as a child to exploring bisexual desires as an adult. These tales were funny, sad, poignant, bizarre, etc., so it should be an interesting time at Lost Weekend…

And if you don't have any memories worthy of sharing, you could probably masturbate in there to make some new ones to confess about…

Ahem. Anyway, should you want to confess (and, hopefully, not be a pervert right there on the spot), swing by Lost Weekend tomorrow (Friday!) from 7-11pm and lay it out.

Mission Open Studios Highlights: Elliott C Nathan's Pop-Up Studio

It's Mission Open Studios time again, meaning hundreds of neighborhood artists will be opening their studio and gallery doors to the general public, giving us a weekend-long art walk of sorts.  And while many of the names and venues participating this round will be familiar to Open Studios veterans, Elliott C Nathan's (who you might remember from yesterday's tax comic or unlucky pennies) temp space at the corner of 24th and Bartlett will be a one-time deal this month and this month only.

Elliott fills us in:

I am taking over 24th and Bartlett for this weekend only; it's a pop-up open studio happening Friday evening, then Saturday and Sunday 10am - 6pm. Outside my regular work, I am also building an interactive piece that people will be able to draw all over.  I will also be featuring my line of Sunken Monkey mini skateboards.  Here's a time lapse video showing the creation of the boards:

Whoa. Sick rooftop view of the city, Elliott. (And sick boards, too)

Anyway, if you haven't already, get familiar with the Mission Open Studios calendar for this weekend and make a note to swing by Elliott's pop-up studio.

Go to Mission Community (Farmers') Market Tonight and Help Fund Their Vision for a Community Market Plaza

If you're interested in whimsical things like fresh produce and roasted almonds and public plazas (and you should be), then tonight's reopening of the Mission Community Market [MCM] is for you:

The Mission Community Market is excited to announce its Opening Day 2012 [tonight at 4pm!], at Bartlett and 22nd Streets in the Mission District. We are pleased to announce new vendors like 4505 Meats and Little City Gardens, and new public art in the Mercado Plaza. The Mercado Plaza is a partnership between MCM, Rebar, Carecen and Poder to create a plaza and public space in the heart of the Mission.

That's right, MCM, along with Rebar (the group who kicked off the whole parklet craze with Parking Day back in 2005), has put forth a proposal to permanently morph Bartlett between 21st and 22nd into a giant outdoor public plaza covered in art and plant-coated walls, and designed to support “street food, markets and urban agriculture.”  And should it come to pass, it'll be the neighborhood's first central gathering place that's not Dolores Park or Zeitgeist.

So go out tonight, buy some apples n' stuff and help make it all happen.

Win Tickets to a Movie About German Kids Mainlining Heroin While Listening to David Bowie!

Our friends at The Roxie have a “teen-girls-gone-wild double-feature” going down this Friday, featuring the ultra-low-budget punk flick Desperate Teenage Lovedolls and the mega-uplifting skin-popper Christiane F., whose description follows:

It's the mid-1970s in West Berlin. You're a 14 year old girl living in a depressing high rise with your single mom. You sneak into clubs, listen to a lot of David Bowie and fall in with the wrong crowd. Soon you're hooked on heroin, your boyfriend's a hustler and you're walking the streets to feed your habit. Holy sheisse! Released to critical acclaim and with severe backlash from the West German government, this harrowing tale of youth gone wrong became an international cult classic as well as the standard anti-drug film shown in German schools. Based on actual events, Christiane F. stems from a series of articles published in Stern magazine that featured interviews with the real Christiane F. (Christiane Felscherinow). An early work by directed by Uli Edel (of The Baader Meinhof Complex fame) it offers a down and dirty glimpse into the lives the drug denizens that populated Berlin's Zoo Station at that time and includes a memorable concert scene with David Bowie.

If that sounds like your idea of a fun childhood/Friday night, like the relevant post about this contest on our Facebook page and, on Friday morning, we'll select someone at random to get a pair of complimentary tickets.  Or go ahead and just buy your tickets now.

"Merry Band of Mariachi-Punk Musicians" to Throw Down at Cyclecide's Heavy Pedal Crank Art Exhibition Closing Party TONIGHT

I know it can be a little hard to see what's going on in the photo, but that's an art gallery full of bikes—oh so many bikes.  And should you want to see this exhibition with your very own eyes, you'll have to head over to The LAB at 16th and Capp between 8-11pm tonight for the closing night party.

Cyclecide has the info:

The aim of this exhibition is to explore the concepts, principles, and ideas that the bike has inspired, transgressed, or altered.

Join us for a fun and inspiring weekend celebrating that most versatile machine, the Bicycle. Artists recycling bicycle parts, making work inspired by the bicycle or building their own hybrid machines include Johnny Payphone (clockwork bike); Keith Martin; August Wood; Loid Mongoloid(bike slot machine and jewelry); Jay Broemmel (slouch cycles-altered bikes); John & Sarina Raffa; Slim Buick (custom vintage bikes); Paul Cesewski (Kinetic bike sculptures); Kal Spelletich (Turbo Trike); Yoli Hadde; Neil Smith & Justin Solomon (Black Label Bike Club,  Oakland); and Jarico Reesce (Cyclecide), among others. We Invite all to come and see bikes that have been transformed or altered into pre-cycled sculptures and vehicles of imagination!

Also join Cyclecide and participating artists for Saturday night’s closing party celebrating the rise of the Bikes. Screenings of Jay Broemmel’s spoof “The Loaded Warrior” and the Cyclecide bike “safety” video. DJs, live performance by Los Banos, Cyclecide’s merry band of mariachi-punk musicians, and more to be announced.

Merry ban of mariachi-punk musicians, you say?  Well worth the $7-15 sliding scale donation!
