Mobile Bowling Lanes to Make Their Debut at Phono del Sol!

We were already plenty excited for next weekend's Phono del Sol Music Fest, but now we learn that the festival will see the debut of Mission Bowling Club's new mobile bowling lanes:

One of the few downsides of being at Phono del Sol is that you won’t be knocking down pins at the awesome Mission Bowling Club. But what if you could do both at the same time?! Because you can! Mission Bowling Club will be debuting some mobile bowling lanes in our beer garden at Phono del Sol, so be sure to stop by, grab some beers and do some outdoor bowling!

And it gets better:

If you’re looking to burn some steam between Phono performances, be sure to check out the assortment of activities and games that will be provided by the folks at Fun and Game Rentals. Stuff like midway games, a bounce house, an inflatable jousting area — you know, good, old-fashioned fun!

If you haven't already, buy your tickets now.

The Cynic Cave: California Comedy in Lost Weekend's Basement

If you've been itching to check out Lost Weekend Video's new Cinecave AND a grip of our favorite local comedians, be sure to head downstairs this Saturday evening with seven bucks in hand for (the hopefully first of many) Cynic Cave California Comedy Night.

(Also, how awesome is that Bart Simpson map of California? Not sure if I'll ever be able to think of the Bay as anything but Bart's mouth from here on out.)

Attn San Francisco: Bill Murray Wants to Crash Your Party

Phoenix, AZ is getting ready for their August 1st visit.

According to the 'totes legit' looking SuperOfficialNews.com, Bill Murray is looking to crash random parties in San Francisco on August 8th. In the article, Murray's agent sets the guidelines for participation and is quoted as saying that partygoers must refer to Murray in person as “Kaiser Soze”, and that he will be looking for parties with karaoke and signs outside that say “BILL MURRAY CAN CRASH HERE”.

Yes, this is fake (Murray doesn't have an agent, and the hotline phone number on the flyer is for the Westboro Baptist church), but it will be interesting to see how many idiots in San Francisco will be suckered into throwing karaoke parties that night and putting signs up outside their house.

Public Enemy to Open for Girl Talk at Treasure Island Music Fest 2012

Treasure Island Music Fest just announced their fairly epic 2012 lineup (via The Bay Bridged). I've been a fan of the XX and Best Coast ever since I read about them on Hipster Runoff.  Girl Talk speaks for himself.  And Porter Robinson is fun, even if his Essential Mix was pretty much A Clockwork Orange's chair of torture for your ears.

So allow me to just get this out of the way now: I love TIMF.  I love that they mistakenly surrendered a pair of press passes to me last year.  I love the ferris wheel.  I love the cries of under-dressed attendees as the fog rolls in.  It's a helluva time, that music festival on Treasure Island.

But what I'm having trouble wrapping my head around is why Public Enemy is opening for a dude who samples Public Enemy.  Was this done for chronological accuracy and an effort not to fuck up the space time continuum?  If that's the case, Grimes should headline because she's technically in the future and The Coup's should open, as their hair still resides in 1974.

This notable 2011 festival attendee knows what I'm talking about:

The Twilight Zone: Live!

Every year, the Mission's beloved Dark Room puts on a live Twilight Zone festival.  They take 10 of their favorite episodes from a given season (season 9 this year), put a spin on 'em, and “air” two episodes each weekend.  Best of all, one of this weekend's episodes is being directed by one of our favorite human beings, the funny and talented Rhiannon Charisse.

Rhiannon fills us in on what you can expect from the festival and what's up for this weekend:

Each weekend there's a brand new Rod Serling, live “commercials” and two new directors come in with their own stage adaptations of Twilight Zone episodes, sometimes funny, sometimes super serious, sometimes they update them to be set today, or back in the old west, or played by the cast of Seinfeld. It's a great way to see shows directed by people that don't always direct, or are new to this, or are really good and just doing a fun short project.

This weekend's episodes are “Nick Of Time” (a classic Shatner episode) directed by Peter Illes and “From Agnes with Love” (originally directed by Richard Donner and starring Wally Cox, better known as Underdog) directed by me. Doors at 7:30, show at 8. The show's short, you'll be out of there by 9:30, plenty of time to get your drink on and still have supported live theater in your neighborhood. Tickets are $20, which I know is a lot, but, again, supporting live theater in your neighborhood.

Support local theater!  (And you can get more info and buy tickets from The Dark Room's site.)

Reminder: Stand-Up Comedy and Hella Pabst Tomorrow Night (Tuesday!) At the Roxie!

Eight on the Bay Area's best comics and 700+ complimentary cans of PBR's best PBR are on tap for tomorrow night.  And if you don't have your tickets yet, they are still available on the Roxie's site, or you can buy 'em at the door.

See you there!

Explore the New Mission Theater While People Discuss its Future!

There's some community meeting about Alamo Drafthouse's plans for the New Mission Theater going on in two weeks, and it's going on inside the theater (which means you'll be able to sneak off and explore the place while feasting on some local concessions).  Mark your calendars.

Tim Cohen (of the Fresh & Onlys) and 8th Grader Doing a Free Show Tonight at Brick + Mortar

Tim Cohen of The Fresh & Onlys has a side project called Tim Cohen.  He's got a Daniel Johnston-esque vibe going on with his music and artwork, so if you like sociopaths and musical genius, this will definitely be worth checking out.

Plus, Music For Animals' frontman's new side project 8th Grader is gearing up to release their latest album, so expect a lot of new stuff from them.  And while they don't have any new videos or anything, Music For Animals' If Looks Could Kill is always a fucking rad watch:

Anyway, the show is free, pints of Trumer are three bucks and all Sailor Jerry drinks are five.  See you there!

The Fresh & Onlys, UMO and Dominant Legs to Headline Phono Del Sol

The Bay Bridged recently unveiled this year's Phono Del Sol line-up, and it's a doozy.  Plus, they're going to have a mess of food trucks on hand if that's your sorta thing.

Now, you're probably noticing the $7-$10 price tag, which is notably more expensive than last year's price of free.  But we're told they're investing in much better equipment, so the sound will be wayyyyyy better this go around.  And louder!  Besides, it's only $7 for a 7 hour festival, you cheap lil' shit.

Tickets will be going on sale Tuesday.  In the meantime, here's the strange video for Unknown Mortal Orchestra's strange single:

San Francisco Streets Surprisingly Clean After Bay to Breakers

Bay to Breakers was yesterday. People attended. Here are some pictures of what went down.

An unfortunate outfit choice

Here is a man defiling Fell st with stomach bile.

If you go to Bay to Breakers for the costumes, you will not be disappointed!

Jk! There were some pretty cool costumes, like these Tetris pieces

and the Golden Gate Bridge

Man in tiger pants enjoys a mid-afternoon nap on the urine-drenched grass of the Panhandle

No bro left behind! Bay to Breakers inspires a strong sense of loyalty among participants

Running: it's really more of a spectator sport!

I live on Fell street and after seeing all this shit go down, I figured that my neighborhood would be a total disaster this morning. Much to my surprise, when I left the house at 7 am, there was just about no trash in the streets or in the Panhandle, no weird lingering scent of urine, and no errant costume remnants. Everything seemed to be business as usual. Some people may take the angle that this event needs to “cleaned up,” but Public Works and the race promoters seemed to be doing an excellent job of that already. For an event where participants seem to have trouble keeping themselves under control, it's nice to see that the city can handle the clean-up like professionals.
